So I Lost my key

So I lost my main black key I have a spare key, but since I lost it at school I'm paranoid someones gonna find my car and steal it. What would be the cost on changing the lock cylinder in my car?

you can have the dealer erase all keys then program your old one and a new one, the lost one wont work then.

Ok well heres the thing, when I bought the car I got two keys, one standard Chevy key that looks like it has the chip in it, and one spare silver metal Saturn key that deff doesn't have a chip. The car doesn't act any different now that I'm using the fake spare key, so im assuming mine doesnt have a the chip, so the idea of disabling them is out.

$600 eeek

if you have a manual transmission, the probability of your car getting stolen goes down

I lost it at school, and I dorm here, so if someone found it they could just go through the parking lot one night and try every Chevy. I wouldn't put it below anyone.

Ahhh man I forgot they would have to change the door tumblers. GOD DAMMIT.

Whatever, its insured.

I say, if you live in town or go to school with alot of white preppy dudes, then dont worry about it. But if you live where I live, with a whole bunch of ghetto stupid kids, then I would be worried.

Does your school have cameras? And how big is your parking lot? Last question could be a difference.

Its HUGE. What if I got like a Viper system with auto start and stuff? Anyway I could go keyless with it and render the existing keys useless without the remote or something?

I think you're worrying a little too much. Is it an SS, cuz I know in this area if my car got jacked, it would be back in a second. Of course a yellow SS/SC is a little hard to miss.

Does your Cobalt have a keypad too? If not just get an alarm, that way if they unlock the door manually the alarm will go off because it will still be armed.

If you're paranoid then put a disconnect on your battery and make sure you don't have anything expensive in the car for a while. Sure they could get into the car but if you have the battery disconnect on, they can't necessarily steal the car. I have seen them where they have some sort of key to them. Once a little bit of time has passed and there is no sign of someone messing with your car then you should be home free.

Viper systems will keep them out..If the shop knows what their doing they can disable the stock keypad in place of the vipers so no unlocking the doors by remote, or trunk nothing it will be dead,, this meens they cant just go through and hit the panic button 2 find it, they would have 2 try every can, and even if they do the best they could do is open the door..the alarm will be going offf and some1 is bound to notice. on top of all of this they can not start your car, unless they have the viper keypad!!As long as your not a moron and install the viper brain wherethey can just rip it out then you will be fine, just dont leave lots of **** in your car for a while i guess...beats changing the locks.

p.s ive been doing this for a little over 3 1/2 years now

Yeah an aftermarket alarm would probably be your best bet. The first day I got mine installed I was driving home and had the music turned up and suddenly my doors locked and I noticed my emergency flashers were on, I turned the radio down and my alarm was going off while I was driving through town

It was pretty embarrassing

then something was wrong. You cant set your alarm off by vibrations/noise while your driving unless its wired wrong. The sensors in the brain are set when the car is in park and your alarm is set. You could have made it go off if you hit the panic button while driving, or held the lock button..Or my personal favorite scenario the shop set up 2 remotes 2 the alarm an when you pulled out they hit 1 of the 2 butons previously mentioned..i only did that a few times 2 ppl who pissed me off lol

Actually you can still open the door with the key without the alarm going off. If you stick the key in there and turn it to LOCK then UNLOCK the alarm wont go off.
