Smile SS vs LS coupe

Hi! First and foremost I'm a newbie here and would like to say hi to everyone. I've been following the forums here for about a month and finally decided to join.

Now to what I wanted to post:
I'm looking to get a new car at the end of May and the Cobalt SS is my top choice at the moment. I'm not looking so much for the power of the car because i'm not planning on doing any racing or anything but I like the look of the SS vs the LS coupe. The three biggest things I like are the leather seats with the color inserts, the SS ground effects, and the 18 inch wheels. Is it worth getting the SS or adding aftermarket stuff on the LS coupe?

First off, welcome to the forums.

Not to start the same thing over again, but what you're comparing is the SS/SC versus the LS Coupe. The SS Coupe will be available as a 2006 model and probably not in may. But that's just to clear up possible confusion.

I see three things here:
Performance -> Not a big deal
Style -> Most important feature
Price -> Not necessarily the biggest deal (implied)

Taking those three things into consideration here's my suggestion.

LS Coupe with 1SB or 1SY (depending on whether you want factory wheels or upgraded ones) and a body kit.

Check out the Appearance section on here for a list of the available body kits, and don't forget that it is possible to add the SS/SC factory body kit to an LS Coupe.

Here's a list of a few options I would suggest:
19C = Ebony Cloth Trim
1SB = whiteface gauges, factory spoiler, 16 aluminum wheels (or)
1SY = whiteface gauges, factory spoiler (then add your own wheel choice)
US8 = Factory upgrade radio with MP3 player
U2K = XM Radio (get an extended contract and do it quick before XM prices go up)
UK3 = Steering wheel controls for audio and cruise.

Again, that's my personal preference.

There are also options to put on your own spoiler and aftermarket gauge faces, both of which have been addressed in the "Appearance" folders, so be sure to check those out.

Body Kits: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/appearance-48/05-06-07-chevy-cobalt-body-kits-651/
Aftermarket Gauges: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/appearance-48/blackcatcustom-guages-cobalts-1640/
Wheel Lugs on LS: 4x100 and can be found just about anywhere

Wow thats quite a response! Sorry wasnt expecting the length of that response. Yes I am talking about the 2005 Cobalt SS model with SC but I can see how some people can be confused. Thought about waiting for the SS 2.4 model because I hear there will be more color choices but thats too long of a time to wait.

Actually what I was looking at is the LS 1SB model with the speakers, xm, CD/MP3, spoiler, sunroof, sports appearance package. What I didnt know was that you could have the SS body kit put on the LS models, I'll have to talk to my dealer about that. I wonder if they could put the low profile spoiler instead of the high one?

Thanks for the thread links I'll be looking into those.

My point exactly

Pinky, If appearance is your thing, it'll be cheaper to just buy an LS and hook it up. Thats what i would do. And you always have the option to throw an aftermarket turbo on it if you feel you want more power later on.

OK Hotsauce and Cobaltss87 cut it out, you are not contributing at all to the thread with these posts. I am sorry you find it annoying to read Bluevillians post, but your posts are even more annoying and even less topical to the discussion in this thread.

I'm just laughing at how juvenile some people are.

I'm glad to have helped, and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I hope these uncontrolled outbursts don't prevent you from contributing in the future.

The spoiler in the 1SB package is the low profile spoiler, if it's the same one I'm thinking of.
(this one)

If you wanted a different one, it would probably be easiest if you ordered it without the spoiler and just add one afterwards. I haven't taken a hard look yet, but I couldn't guarantee that they use the same mounting holes.

Is this on topic at all.

In any way remotely? Please stay on topic in the forums, not my rule.

I didnt know my thread would stir up contrevorsy (need spellchecker! )

Is the spoiler part of the body kit? Reason I asked is because Villian mentioned that the SS bodykit could be put on an LS coupe. (I'm new havent figured out how to do that quote thing) If this is true and the bodykit includes the spoiler then it would come with the high profile one, not the low profile one, right?

Personally, I dont like the high profile one too much.

As much as he says I do it, the only posts I've ever seen by them were criticizing me for being correct. So don't worry about it.

The SS/SC factory body kit can simply be ordered from either your dealerships body shop or parts department, and you can order whichever piece(s) you want. So if you want the front fascia, rear valance, side skirts and nothing else, you can do that.

Just to make it even more confusing... you can order the factory front, the RK rear and the Razzi sides if you wanted to. No limitations there. That's the beauty of it.

Smile thank you

My boyfriend keeps telling me to go for the SS model but I think he just wants to be "speed racer" in it. Not my thing I might go for the LS coupe instead, not to excited about the speeding, although it might help getting me to work on time in the morning. Something to think about!

Thanks for the great info. I guess I'll head to the appearance threads for further assistance (if needed).

Thanks!!!

I want to add the lower SS ground effects to mine, keep the factory low spoiler, then add my own 17 or 18" wheels. That way it doesn't look like every other cobalt around, and it has all the things I like the best, no compromise.

Nice. Thats what I was looking at as far as the body kit. The wheels, I still like the 18s on the SS so I want to see if they can put those on the LS coupe. The only thing that I am still debating are the leather seats with the color inserts. Would it be possible to get those on an LS model?

Hello and welcome to the site.

First off I would like to apologize for the flamers. Let me assure you they do not represent the site. We are a very friendly group of people and a good atmosphere is the sites #1 goal. So lets drop the off topic pissing off contest

About your Cobalt decision:
IMO you can make a coupe look just as good or even better then the SS if looks are your goal. The same thing can be true about speed. Slap a turbo kit on and you are set. This is assuming you want to heavily modify the engine and void the warranty.

If you get the SS you are already pretty much set as far as appearance and speed and it will cost you about the same as customizing the LS

I would sit down and write your goals for the car. What do you want to do with it? Just go to car shows, race on the track, or both?
Then calculate the monetary differences in the cars with the mods you want, and insurance. Go with what fits your lifestyle best.

I love both of them

Anything is possible aftermarket. I'm pretty sure I have a local company who can get the seats (and/or leather kits for the seats) for you if you can't find one in your area.

(The leather kits basically adds aftermarket leather that is made to look exactly like the factory seats. I'm pretty sure I can even get the "Recaro" logo on them if you want.)

Gosh I think all this aftermarket stuff including the price of the car would add up to the price of an SS. Unless I get a base coupe then maybe it might be worth it. I'm really gonna have to sit down and figure out what I want. Thank you all for your comments. I'm glad Ive got till May to think about it.

Again, thanks and thank you for the warm welcome!

I didn't think the UK3 option was available. I saw nothing of it anywhere. Where did you find it? My dealer never heard of it either.

I think it would be nice if it were possible to get the steering wheel audio controls on the LS without having to get the Sport Package.

y0!

Hey Pinky25, welcome to the forums. Just wanted to throw some words at you, to perhaps persuade you to a decision you're happy with. I like a custom car, everyone likes a custom car. Noone out there wants to look like everyone else, it's our human nature to be different. So what I suggest to you is this; buy an ls coupe. With the money you save, plan on spending it on aftermarket parts and making your car unique. Theres nothing nicer than having a customized vehicle, whether it's fast or not is upto the driver (not thier boyfriend or friends.). Ignore most of the expensive options from the dealer, such as alloy wheels and spoilers, anyone can walk into a dealership and buy that crap. Take some time to pick out some nice aftermarket wheels, tint your windows, then take a moment to sit back and analyze the way your car looks. It's already hotter than any stock cobalt, SS or not. At that point figure out how to make your car even more unique and fitting to your personality, you spent the money, shouldn't it be YOURS? thats my .02!
