Stock Air Box CAI Conversion
Stock Air Box CAI Conversion
If anyone is intersted, I converted my stock air box to be a CAI style box. It took about two hours from strat to finish. I spent $35 total for this, $28 at Pep Boys for a APC filter and $6 at Home Depot for a plumbing reducer from3" to 2".
I started by removing the left front tire for better access. I removed the screws to get to stock air box location. I clipped the zip tie that was holding wires to the bottom of the air box. Uplugged the sensor and removed the 3 nuts holding the air box on. I then removed the clamp on the top side and the entire box assembly was removed. This took a little work, it does not fall right out. I then removed the stock filter and started to cut. I used my air cutter to cut straight around to top side. The best way I can describe what I did is, the top side where the stock air filter connects to to box is where I cut. Once I cut this left only the single mounting hole to mount back to the car, which is ok, it is strong enough because your shaving lots of wieght here. OK, cut is complete and area was sanded to look good. I then took the rubber pipe reducer iI got at Home Depot and put the large side on and tightened the clamp. Don't tigten to much for you can damage the plastic air box. I the removed the clamp from the small side and put on the APC filter and tightened the clamp here. I was relieved at how well this came out. It is very sturdy and looks pretty clean as well. I then put the new air box configuration into the car. Again getting the piece through the side wall of the engine bay takes some work, attched the 1 mounting nut. Re-secured the clamp on top, put the fender well back together and put tire back on. The new air filter is a close fit inside the compartment, close as iin the fender well pieces clear with only a little room, but thats OK, it does not move from that spot so it was OK. I started the car and was ver pleased with the new air box sound. When I get in the throttle you can really here the Supe Charger winding up. Sounds great but still quite for daily driving. This may not be for you, but if you want a stock looking cold air type system try this. I do have pics of the finished product that I can e-mail if someone wants. Cant figure out to upload pics in this site yet.

Sorry!
Kids where playing with digital cam and had settings wrong. My bad, but still shows the basics. Did come out alot better than expected and great performance boost. Thanks for posting the pic ArrivalBlueSS.
Yea
I got 1 about a day after the conversion. But I brain farted and did reset the computer by disconnecting battery when I did this. So I disconnected the battery and reset that way. Have not had problem since and I have put about 500 miles with no light.
