Doing anything that alters the light of your taillights is illegal I'm pretty sure, I drove around for about 7 months on my old car with nightshades and didnt get hassled, I guess if the cops a dick he'll do something about it

As specified by PA law:

"A vehicle specified under this subchapter shall be equipped with parking lamps, stop lamps, tail lamps, turn signal lamps and hazard warning lamps designed for that specific function, which under normal atmospheric conditions shall be capable of being seen and distinguished during nighttime operation at a distance of 500 feet."

It's illegal everywhere, and it's not only an issue at night. It's especially dangerous to drivers around you during the day and dusk, because the sun's glare normally reduces the amount of red light significantly.

My suggestion is that you apply one layer of translucent paint, and at the most a second mist to make it a little darker. Of course, side reflectors and smaller lights can be painted darker.

It looks cool, but it's very dangerous to other drivers. I don't want to see you in the hospital for whiplash, or your car in the shop with 6 grand in rear-end repairs.

As with anything illegal, don't expect a cop to always give you a break (if they do at all)

this is why you leave the 3rd brake light untouched.

similar to oklahoma's.

its legal if your lights become visible at a distance of no less than 1000' so if you're 1000' feet away and can see them. you're good.

Its only illegal if you do it to dark, or if you tint your reverse lights. Thats how it is in WV anyway.

i changed my tail light bulbs to some aftermarket ones and everyone kept telling me my tail lights are to bright. to i tinted them and now no one is complaining. the cops around here dont really bother you for that but if you have anything on your plates good luck.
