Talking Talk me into a 2.4

I currently have a Tiburon GT (V6, 6 spd), but have been stewing on a 2006 SS, or 2005 SS/SC. What are the incentives to go 2.4?

One plus I can think of is that I live in Minnesota, and I know the 245 wide tires on the SC will not work in the snow. The 215 that come on the SS/NA will.

I would certainly do the CAI if I got the 2.4 - a very cheap 4 to 5 hp. Are there other tweaks coming down the pike for the 2.4?

Thanks in advance.

'05 Cobalts no matter what they are, are lemons, go with the 06 it'll save you alot of head aches. Plus the 2.4 in my oponion is a better platform to start modding especially if the Hahn Turbo kit comes out soon

go with cobalt ss 2.4

I was in the market for a new car and was looking at 3 possible replacements for my Pontiac Grand Sham- Scion TC, 06 Civic Si, and the Cobalt SS 2.4 5 spd. Needless to say after numerous test drives of all cars, I went with the Cobalt SS 2.4. I loved the Civic Si, but I didnt like the premium gas that went with it. The Scion TC was very nice with decent motor and interior but it had lower gas mileage and less horsepower with the same sized engine as the SS 2.4. Also it didnt seem like you could fit as much stuff in the car even though its a hatchback. I picked the SS 2.4 for a couple reasons- great gas mileage, good aftermarket, great deal w/GM supplier discount&military discount. I know the cobalt is lacking in a couple areas namely handling and interior but I dont really care, I got what I wanted-great looking car all the way around with a good engine.

That's total BS, not a single problem with anything in or outside of the car, performance, or interior or anything. Lemon yes, only because it is yellow. Get a brand new ss/sc man.

I stand corrected. The SS/SC gets 215's - the SS/NA gets 205's. My mistake.

get the 2.4 ss n/a the mods that are going to come out for them will well surpass the things that you can do with the 2.0 ss s/c. the 2.4 platform has not even been out for a year and there is already alot of mods out for with a turbo and supercharger to come out soon... and from what i have read there isnt going to be to much intrnal mods needed for the 2.4 engine. also either the ss n/a or the ss s/c is faster than a tiburon...

Personally I have a 2.4ss and love it, but the only thing anyone can say, is take them all for a test drive. The 2.4 has pretty good power output for the engine size and im currently getting 9.9L/100km (pretty much 500KM to a tank of gas) with a good mix of both Highway and City driving.

9.9L/100km = roughly 37.4 MPG if I did the calculations right.

Personally, maybe its just because I'm on the east coast of Canada, but I would never drive in the winter with these tires, the tire tread would be terrible for ice and snow. When they class a tire ALL SEASON I don't think they take into consideration, any more than .5 inch worth of snow if any at all.

I would totally recommend getting a set of 16" steels with winters.

Mine's such a lemon that I've had absolutely no problems but my gas cap not being threaded correctly...besides the chances of finding a new '05 now that the '07s will be starting production soon (not to mention no 2.4L in '05) is pretty slim.

As for the snow, people around here just put winters on their SS/SC so that's always an option if you wanted to go that route. Just remember that 15s won't fit and you'll be fine . Both are a good option just depends really how much power you're looking for and personal preference.

The 2.4 is basically a bored out 2.2, and the 2.2 is basically a bored out 2.0 (even though the 2.2 came first, that's beside the point). The 2.0 is overbuilt and made to take advantage of the power you put into it. The 2.4 is probably capable of making more power (no replacement for displacement) but you'll have to replace / upgrade the internals long before you would on the 2.0. It's the same reason they de-stroked the Caddy engine before the threw the blower on it. All in the name of durability.

Long story short - the 2.4 = more potential for more money.

edit: Oh, and as for the car, the only thing I can see is that if you're going to be playing in the snow, the only reason for a 2.4 is if you need an automatic. Snow tires are readily available for either.

I have a 2.4 and regret not getting the 2.0. But I would say test them both out and if your satisifed with the 2.4, get that and save about 2-3K.

With either one your going to want to get winter tires so I don't know why your even putting that into consideration. My 2.4 tires (P6) were terrible last winter but I was tight on cash so I just put up with it. The 2.0 Rossos are even worse.

Both cars are nice. Id say go with the ss/sc I love mine and drive it every day like it's the first day I brought it home. As far as the 2.4 guys saying they have a better platform they really can't guarantee that until we have seen some of the 2.4's with the turbo.

2.0's have oil squirters, forged internals etc etc. WAY easier to squeeze power out of the 2.0 than 2.4.

Plus suspension/transmission are upgraded on teh 2.0

Nobody should have to "talk you into" anything. Either you like a car (and research it youself) and get it or you weigh other options out there. I would never buy a car based on what other people think.....

Erhm yeah, your calculations are off. 9.9L/100km is only 24ish MPG

My All Season Perilli's made my SS/SC 2.0 a Formidible car in the Snow... I pulled up snow covered hills where other stock cards, aka Corollas, Mini-vans, and a Lexus couldn't.

$650 for a set of 4 and I never looked back!

Just curious, but where did you read the 2.4 has oil jets?

I'm sure the SC owners will be all over me, but I drove a SS/SC at lunch. I was rather let down. I expected the engine to kick my head back when I launched it, and it did not. I checked to make sure the a/c was off, cause I know that will really drag the acceleration on some cars - and the a/c was off. On paper the SS/SC should be faster than my Tiburon, but it did not feel any faster - in fact I think my Tiburon GT feels faster. So either its a very flat curve for torque on the SC, or I am getting more out of my Tiburon mods (CAI, performance manifold intake, Borla exhaust) than I estimated.

I think its time to drive a SS/NA again.

Beleive me, I'm not posting this to put anybody down. This was just my impression. Your mileage (impression) may differ.
