OK, yes, it CAN be rice. If it's there just for looks - it is RICE.
HOWEVER, some road courses WILL NOT allow you on track without a functional tow hook and location depends on where the strongest mounting point is, some are on the front, some are on the back. Many are hidden so that the hook can be removed for daily driving. IIRC the MINI Cooper S's have them on the back bumper support with a removeable tab in the bumper so that you can screw the hook down in for the track day and then remove it and replace the tab so that it's "hidden" during normal driving.

We got to see a fullsize Ram 1500 get stuck in a ditch at a meet once, a little ol Hummer H3 had to pull it out. The dodge driver probably wanted to kill himself, there were 100 people watching and yelling that he shoulda got the HEMI.
There IS. I'd like to have one in case I run across a track that requires it, but most of the time you have it done by a professional and it's custom made and hidden on the body somewhere. If I were to put one on the SS, IMO depending on where the stronger point on the frame is, I'd either put one that could be accessed by removing the rear bumper inserts or by going through the hole in front of the condenser.
Musta been a 2wd ive never been stuck in my ram, took it mudding up to the doors last summer.
GM>Dodge that night.
Just cause the Hummer H3 is midsize, i didn't think it was baby size? And i have pulled out a minivan with my old Caprice before. Minivan was buried in snow up to the hubs. Limited slip diff ftw!
These work pretty well... not the same look but probably more functional.

and i dont know what tracks you guys go to, but some in my area require rear tow hooks, so why be a dick about it?

He's not saying that the H3 is pointless, but compared to it's big brothers the H1 and more civilized H2, it's the baby of the family. Just like the Cobalt SS is the baby of GM's performance market. H3 + V8 + Short Wheel base = Mud monster. Like a Jeep Wrangler but better.
