upgrade the power steering.

Im all for the recall on the Cobalt power steering. It has been a long time coming, but the question that I cant seem to find an answer too is this:How will GM improve on the new powers steering motor?A recall is great, but if they dont improve the P.O.S electric motor on the steering column, this problem will happen over and over again.ALL electric parts eventually wear out and I can see how any fix would be permenant unless they change it out to the old tried and proven power steering pump.It just seems like a band-aid on an artery wound to recall all these cars only to put the same failing part on them for another 20-30,000 miles.

Regular hydraulic power steering pumps fail all the time too. Same thing with leaky steering racks and numerous other issues as cars get older.

Will this recall permanently solve and prevent all future power steering issues for every Cobalt owner? I doubt it and I also don't expect it either. It's an inexpensive economy car and although they may last 500,000 miles they aren't designed to. Same thing with $75k luxury cars. Everything has a service life to include the stock electrically assisted power steering.

Overall it has many advantages over a conventional system with less potential points of failure. If GM has properly researched what was causing the premature failures and issues then this recall should be very effective. We don't even know yet what the extent of repairs will be, but at least they are doing something and not shafting Cobalt owners with expensive repair bills when out of warranty.

you also need to understand, GM probably doesnt make the motors, a vendor does. You car was built with parts from the lowest bidder, thats why **** fails.

i think GM uses Delphi power steering motors. not sure though.

so yeah technically it isn't GM's fault.

I know that JTEKT Corporation makes the power steering motor for The Cobalt.I just hope that they have some sort of an upgrade.I have a friend that has put 3 power steering motors in his cobalt under warranty. The second one went out after only 6,000 miles.

Delphi makes those body control modules that are giving alot of problems. They are mounted down in the passenger side floorboard on the console.I think when those go out the car dies, every light on the console blinks.Pretty much acts like the thing is gonna blow.

Question...should a cobalt owner who is not experiencing these defects in the power steering still take it in to get it replaced as a precaution? Or will GM dealerships not work on the car unless you have this problem? I ask because the way i interpreted the recall is that any owner can bring it in to get replaced if out of the factory warrantee range

its a recall so if you get the letter, take it in. Only like a TSB is it only if you get the problem, recall is you take it in no matter what.

the whole steering column internally rattles. you can hear/feel it.

don't worry you'll get the infamous rattle sooner or later.

that rattle you are talking about is the rack and pinion. It does it over bumps or just simply driving.Sounds like somethings gonna fall apart.I have a personal friend that works at the GM stealership here who I know wouldnt do me wrong. He told me that the rack and pinion gets a small amount of play internally. He says that it is not going to fail or harm anything as long as I can put up with the rattle/knocking.Apparently all Cobalts are going to do it at some point.
