What tracks the cars mileage

Newbie question here. First off there are a lot of people here who switch out their ECU's with different tunes on them. So wouldn't this affect the mileage reading or is there something else on the car that keeps track of the odometer?

As far as I know the PCM holds that information.

The BCM keeps track of mileage not the PCM. So you wont lose or be able to "reset" your mileage by swapping to a new PCM.

Unplug you vss (vehicle speed sensor) located on the transmission and it will stop counting.

Yup. You also won't have a working speedometer. Your tac will work so if you know your rpms at certain speed you'll be fine. I did it on my leased ls balt for a whole year. You also must have a standard tranny

the car also tracks hours that the engine has been running. so hopefuly unplugging the speed sensor disables that also. someone i know rolls the miles and hours on their lease all the time b4 they turn it in.

Yes. U do have a mil light when you do this. And they didn't record the hours on my lease 3 years ago. I'm not advising anyone to do this, I'm merely saying its possible
