What type of fuel in the 2.4L engine?

Hi everyone

I'd like to know what type of fuel you put in your 2.4L engine. What about the mileage? Anyone of you used regular fuel and experienced knocking? I'm from Canada, Montreal and i'd like to know you opisions on that subject.

I know that GM says that we can put super in the car but it's not an obligation.

Thank you very much.

01sunfire01, have you ever tried regular, 87, fuel in it? If yes, have you ever experienced knocking?

you should not use less than 91 octane.

The dealer put 87 in mine when I picked it up, since then I've been running 93 or 94 when available. Try to stay away from Speedways and other discount gas stations.
I didn't have any kind of knock. I average about 29 on the highway, cruising at 70.. my all driving average is about 24.
If you have knock, it could be from bad gas in general..

Mine 2.4 also had 87 in it when I bought it and it never knocked once. I have put in mid grade and premium. I notice maybe one or 2 more MPG with 91-93, or V-Power from Shell. It SEEMS a little more explosive acceleration wise, but under normal driving, barely a difference. I have 5700 on my car right now, and I have never had it knock once by running 87 octane for a full tank, not mixing it with anything.

GM Recommends the 91, but not required. Like I said, never experienced knock, si I just go by the gas prices. Usually if premium is under 2.50 I'll buy that, but otherwise I'll run mid-grade or regular with nary a problem. You'll find this topic on the redline forums as well as the hhr forums and here the same answers.

I also put 93 octane in mine. It definitely pulls more at WOT than on that first tank of crap juice the dealer put in there.

Plus I'm doing my part for the environment, and I get to baby my new hotness.

89 is the rule of thumb for most cars. Honestly if you have a four-banger, not much of a need for a higher fuel grade unless your at the track. Unless you have a super/turbo charger then that gives a good reason to use 91 or higher. I mean shoot, my brother runs regular most the time in his Ram 1500 Hemi and still runs w/o knocking.

Or can just go to a Hess or Sunoco and not Jim's Gas Place.

when i had my ls balt i used 87 for a while. the one weekend i decided to go visit my friend in collegeabout a 3hr drive 150 miles or so. right befor i left i filled up with 93 and i aveaged 37 mpg on the way up and i hit alota traffic in the city. i would usually only 34 mpg on 87. i also felt a noticible power difference. when my cousin got his g5 GT he wanted to race me. i knew i was gonna lose 2.4 vs 2.2. i had about an 8th of a tank of 93 in my car lack and spare tire removed (gotta get every advantage i can get lol) and he had just filled up on 87. from a dig i stayed right with him i was at his bumper at 40, a car behind by 60. 2 cars back at 80, after that he was gone 2.2 balts dont have much after 80 mph and he put like 3 more cars on my 105. was it the gas idk but i didnt expect to stay that close to him. were both auto. then i got an SS/SC and smoked his ass haha.
i use 93 every time i fill up. sorry for the mini thread jack

93 will not give you more power in a 2.2. octane has zero to do with making power. you're supposed to use the lowest octane that doesn't produce knock. anything more is hurting more than helping, and wasting money.

alot is in your head too... i once tried 91 in my 2.2, and i definitely got better mileage... but when i thought about it, it was because i drove a little easier than normal because i was TRYING to see if i would get better mileage... i can't say i noticed any power increase at all, and it was more expensive... not much though

I disagree that using a higher octane fuel will be bad for your engine. It is possible that it has no noticeable benefits, however.
On the more expensive comment - I really don't think so, you are talking about maybe $5 difference in price per fillup. Kinda like people that drive all over to find gas a nickel cheaper per gallon, when on a 13 gallon fill-up that's only 65 cents.
Just use the good stuff, even if you fill up once a week you're talking about $20 a month.. if you can't spare $20 maybe you should be looking at something a bit older.

Here in the Chicago area we haven't had Sunoco for about 25 years.

higher octane does NOT = better gas... it doesn't... there's a few HUGE misconceptions about what octane is... all it is is the gas's resistance to detonation... higher octane = harder to ignite... if you're 2.2 is supposed to be running rugular, and that's what it's tuned for, that's what will work best... end of story... higher octane will do nothing except not totally burn, which means less power... it's not a debate, it's just facts...

i would recommend everyone that thinks that higher octane is either better, or adds more power to do some research on this subject... most people incorrectly associate higher octane with more power because higher horsepower cars use higher octane... again, you're supposed to use the octane that your car is rated for, nothing higher. if you're using something higher, you need to tune your engine to take advantage of it...
