what is wheel hop?
what is wheel hop?
i had my 1st race today... and when i shifted into 2nd the tires whe jumping off the ground.... it allmost pulled me into the other lane.... is this wheel hop and how can it be stoped?

Definition: An undesirable suspension characteristic in which a wheel (or several) moves up and down so violently that it actually leaves the ground. Wheel hop can be caused by many problems, including excessive unsprung weight, insufficient shock damping, or poor torsional axle control.

I think the wheel hop most SC owners are complaining about come as a trade-off to a very refined feeling ride. Unlike the SRT-4 which is more grunt and race-inspired, the Cobalt's are built with everyday driving in mind. I think the same analogy would work with other cars as well. The SS/SC is quick - yes. But the liquid filled motor mounts to reduce engine and cabin vibration have a lot of give and so wheel hop with a car with this much torque is inevitable.

does anyone happen to know if the engine bay of the cobalt coupe and sedan (non SSs/c) are the same? if so i already have a car for development.
In my experiences with the SS, I have found wheel hop to be very closely related to the road surface. Even with the LSD, I can get some nice spinning to occur on new or nicely evenly paved road surfaces. I get wheel hop in most other roads.
It was the same with my Cavalier. Wheel hop on shitty roads. Spin on nice ones. The SS is the same, but the problem is multiplied due to more power.

either way, these braces help by putting less stress on the transmission mounts and motor mounts by preventing engine rock, thereby transferring torque more directly to the wheels without the negative effects of a solid mount (unless you get the double brace which is like a removable solid mount, great for the track).

What the hell are you on?

i wheel hop if i launch over 1.5k..right at the top of first and it will turn into a damn jack rabbit.
anyhoo, what is wheel hop? well, imagine if you will, your engine (from a side view through the fender). when you hit the gas, the engine rocks back...becomming unbalanced. but you are still moving forward, while it is leaned back. you go to shift or give it more 'umpf' and the unbalancing cause you to loose traction/break grip/and depending on how fast you are telling the car to go, your wheel wip hop up and down. but if you do it alot/really hard....you are gonna wind up breaking something. motor mounts hold your engine up straight, to keep traction down on the wheels and what not.
wheel hop > fwd

Thats like calling the 1984 Corvette Z51 suspension a soft ride option.

Yep, Just in magazines what the hell do they know it's not like the run them in the slalom or a circle skidpad.
I have had F-Bodies to Mustangs and yes the Cobalt SS handles better. And the STi is maybe a equal comparission but the WRX isn't even close.
AWD doen't make up for a weak suspension.
