Definition: An undesirable suspension characteristic in which a wheel (or several) moves up and down so violently that it actually leaves the ground. Wheel hop can be caused by many problems, including excessive unsprung weight, insufficient shock damping, or poor torsional axle control.

There's that Goofy guys torque brace too, that the redlines use to eliminate wheel hop.

Not sure if it works on the cobalts yet

I think the wheel hop most SC owners are complaining about come as a trade-off to a very refined feeling ride. Unlike the SRT-4 which is more grunt and race-inspired, the Cobalt's are built with everyday driving in mind. I think the same analogy would work with other cars as well. The SS/SC is quick - yes. But the liquid filled motor mounts to reduce engine and cabin vibration have a lot of give and so wheel hop with a car with this much torque is inevitable.

the torque brace eliminates it in while still keeping vibrations out of the cabin

yes there are. they actually fit both. i'm not saying any more right now until i've paid my vendor fees, but then i'll clue you all in on the details. there is at least one cobalt running it with great sucess (SSs/c)

i'll also be looking to make a setup for the regular cobalts as well, not sure if the normal ion design will fit it.

does anyone happen to know if the engine bay of the cobalt coupe and sedan (non SSs/c) are the same? if so i already have a car for development.

In my experiences with the SS, I have found wheel hop to be very closely related to the road surface. Even with the LSD, I can get some nice spinning to occur on new or nicely evenly paved road surfaces. I get wheel hop in most other roads.

It was the same with my Cavalier. Wheel hop on shitty roads. Spin on nice ones. The SS is the same, but the problem is multiplied due to more power.

have you been to the track?

either way, these braces help by putting less stress on the transmission mounts and motor mounts by preventing engine rock, thereby transferring torque more directly to the wheels without the negative effects of a solid mount (unless you get the double brace which is like a removable solid mount, great for the track).

i wheel hop if i launch over 1.5k..right at the top of first and it will turn into a damn jack rabbit.
anyhoo, what is wheel hop? well, imagine if you will, your engine (from a side view through the fender). when you hit the gas, the engine rocks back...becomming unbalanced. but you are still moving forward, while it is leaned back. you go to shift or give it more 'umpf' and the unbalancing cause you to loose traction/break grip/and depending on how fast you are telling the car to go, your wheel wip hop up and down. but if you do it alot/really hard....you are gonna wind up breaking something. motor mounts hold your engine up straight, to keep traction down on the wheels and what not.

wheel hop > fwd

Right now, my chair. If you want to challenge the comment I've made, then I think I am going to need better than "What the hell are you on" to answer properly - punk

I wouldn't call a car that out handles everything in it's class and beyond built for everyday driving.

Thats like calling the 1984 Corvette Z51 suspension a soft ride option.

sorry, but the ss does not out handle 'everything' in its class. maybe in the magazines, but if i recall correctly, they were putting the regular wrx and the ss in the same category.

awd > fwd

Yep, Just in magazines what the hell do they know it's not like the run them in the slalom or a circle skidpad.

I have had F-Bodies to Mustangs and yes the Cobalt SS handles better. And the STi is maybe a equal comparission but the WRX isn't even close.

AWD doen't make up for a weak suspension.
