would you do this to your cobalt?
Still 100% fine

If you REALLY think its that hard on your car read my article, because I'm not going to waste my time trying to convince people with a bunch of mods that driving on dirt isnt the end of the world (while theyre out grenading 3rd gear on the street)

I can't preach it enough - go race your car! If you're not, you are completely missing the point of it, and I feel desprately sorry for you.

Hey look ill give ya points for having the ***** to do it and for showing what our platform can due in other venues but ill stick to the occasional auto x and dragstrip now lets not pretend dirt hitting paint isnt abrasive and doesnt do some damage and you do have a current thread going about the drivetrain moving around in your car but in the end i agree with You the people who dont race their ss in some way are really missing out on what this car does best personally ill just leave the rally x to you

But the car does have 100k miles on it.
I guess I'm biased on the paint issue because:
1: I bought the car in CO and the previous owner had run it through carwashes with salt still on it (or so I hypothesized) and it already had some swirling, rock chips and general wear that paint gets in a winter climate.
2: It really needs to be repainted, but is a sold 5 footer. If I were to get it painted I may reconsider doing rally x without throwing some plastidip on it first.
3: I've got a guy who will do a touch up respray for what amounts to basically nothing. Its just taking the time to prep some small issues and tape it that has kept me thus far

^^ Me and a friend of mine who rallys his cavalier ran in the same class. PF (I was number 77) - I not only improved by 20s over the event but also my last run was faster than all of the Modified Awd (MA) class. This includes STIs, Evos etc. Also the cavalier was in 5th overall.
FWD cars make excellent (and very very fun) rally cars. They do tend to be more momentum oriented as I wont argue that AWD will pull you out of a hole and let you back the car into corners - but a well driven fwd car will be damn near as fast as an AWD one in similar levels of prep - and maybe even faster on a higher speed stage as the AWD system adds weight and drivetrain loss into the equation.
Is it ideal? Maybe not - but the relatively long travel of the FE5 suspension and good dampers and spring rates makes it surprisingly competent on dirt. The tail end is VERY happy and the LSD pulls it out of corners very well.
