Wow

Yessssss, after 6 months of waiting i picked up my SS/SC yesterday...and all i can say is WOW. I put 100 kms on her last night; finally comin' home at 2 am exhausted

It's been raining here in Vancouver, BC (surprised? ) so as soon as it clears up i'll get some pics goin'.

Anyways i have a couple questions:

1. Dealer told me to keep it under 3k rpm for the first 3000 kms. Is he just being overcautious? I've heard on here that most ppl are keeping it under 4k w/ no problems...

2. They tried to sell me on the GM paint protection thing...can anybody working at a GM dealership give me the no-bullsh*t low-down on this? They basically told me that "waxing a black car with eventually make the paint job have swirls, and with the GM package u never need to wax again" but i've always had black cars w/ no probs and i LIKE
waxing...scam??????

Thanks guys,
p.s. Amazing car, i love having an adrenaline doctor on call 24/7

-Rob

Get SOME kind of paint protection. The paint SUCKS. I had more chips in the paint in the first week than I got in 8 years with my Cavalier.

As for break in, don't redline it and vary the RPMs, don't do a lot of highway driving at constant speeds.

Congrats and welcome!

As for the GM Paint Protection package, what they do is apply a sealant to the paint. It's not an end-all to protection though. The sealant is just like other sealants/waxes that you can buy (from Mother's, Meguiar's, etc.) They are feeding you a line that you will never have to wax/seal your paint again. Good paint sealants only last 6 months generally; and that's even with proper paint preparation.

i def. did not keep it under 3000 RPM... wouldnt it make more sense to break it in the same way you will drive it later?

Yea that's exactly what i'm thinking aswell...i think im just gonna take it easy for the first bit (no hard launches/clutch dropping) but i'm not gonna limit my rev's too much.

Hmmm...i'm so confused...some ppl are making the GM paint protection sound like wax/sealant but others make it sound like those invisible bumper bra's that protect the paint from chips...

Anyways thanks for the help guys/gals appreciate it

don't do hard launches but show that engine every part of the RMP spectrum ...there are lots of studys that show more power gains with a hard break in

it is ok to give the clutch and the brakes a nice breakin though

Edit: and Welcome to the club

From what I have heard about the paint protection from GM, it is a Teflon based comopund that they spray on. My dad had it on his Sonoma and it worked pretty well. Water would bead right off the paint.

Yep definite rip-off.

As others have said, rev the engine all over the RPM band but stay away from long drives at the same RPM.

why wouldn't you rev it over 4000 there are numerous publications that state for max power potential you need to rev the engine over the entire range ..

The manual says broken in after 800k. I trust the the engineers more than the sales guys. Have fun with it when you hit 800 Until then rev, but not under full throttle, and let the engine do a bunch of breaking to help seat the rings.

Yup, agreed. The manual I think said to keep revs below 5,000rpm, avoid hard launches, and avoid engine breaking. I agree with all of that, except the engine braking. How do you drive a manual transmission car without engine braking??? Do you go around corners in neutral???? I guess you can pull it out of gear when coasting to a stop, but no engine breaking???

Most modern engines are basically broken in already, so you don't have to be too easy on them. 3,000 kms is B.S.! Drive the **** out of her at 800 kms!

And GM paint protection is worth it!

Glad to hear you got your car! Hope you don't miss the bus too much!

If your going to drive hard make sure the clutch goes out before 10000 miles no questions asked free replacement after that 1300 bucks.

The thing I always wonderd about dealer added stuff like paint protection and undercoating is why don't they just do it at the factory?
