How to: Change the color of the LED's on the Projectors

I recently decided to change the color of the LED's in my projectors. I felt that the white LED's that originally come installed with the vehicle to amber to match the turn signal and the orange color of the vehicle. I purchased 6 194 amber Oval LED's that are 12V from Auto Lumination . I purchased their oval lens LED's. These are the same size and lens of the originals, but are just 12V instead of 4V. The problem about installing these into the original wiring is that the LED's are wired in series.

Here is a diagram that shows how the lights are wired. What this does it take the 12V that the car supplies are shares the voltage across all 3 LED's. This will only allow 4V per LED. This is not enough to light the new LED's. Here is how you will need to do complete this mod.

Note: You can remove the headlight from the vehicle. This would make things easier but I decided not to. Also, these instructions assume that you have already gone though mkulrey13’s how to wire up halos for projectors.

1. Remove the light sockets that are in the projector. They pull right out.
2. Cut the 2 wires that are supply the power to the LED's.
3. Cut the wires that are connecting the 3 sockets together.
4. You will need to install the sockets in parallel. This will supply 12V per socket, This will allow the LED's to have enough voltage to light. Here is a diagram to show how you will need to wire them. You might need to add some extra wire so that you can have enough to reinstall the sockets.

5. Install the new LED's into the sockets.
6. Turn on the parking light to see if the LED's light. If they don't, turn off the parking lights and remove the LED. Turn it a half of a turn and reinstall it into the socket. If this does not fix it, recheck your connections to make sure that everything is properly connected
7. Reinstall the sockets into the projectors. They are kinda difficult to install into the projectors. The rubber sockets will catch on the edges. just keep pushing on them and they will finally slide into place.

That is all that is needed to change the color of the LED's. Here are the picture of them after they were installed. They are from my camera phone, but they will do good enough to show how this changed them. Sorry I did not take picture of this while I was installing them.

Here is a picture of the new LED’s with Vision Bulbs 4300K HID’s and Luminics JDM Yellow Fog Lights.

Close Up.

Nighttime

NOTE: If you are purchasing just LED's and not the LED's that are in a 194 bulb socket, DO NOT FOLLOW THIS HOW TO. Doing this will cause the LED's to blow because of the extra voltage.

Do you know if the LED's for the halo's are lit with the same LED? If so, can you post a link of where you got those LED's? I know lots of people are having problems with them blowing out.

Thanks!

I don't know about the Halo's. The person that you would probably want to ask is mkulrey 13. He is the LED specialist. All that I made this how to for was for the 3 LED's in the top.

Umm, not to drag out an old thread but I replaced my LEDs with the same ones and didn't have to re-wire anything - they lit up fine just by plugging them into the slots. Mine are the round inverted ones & are 12v 194 bulbs.

I bought mine off of Ebay

Here

I got 20 of them for about 15.00 shipped to me.

Also, I have purchased from this company in the past. When I had my Cavalier almost every bulb in it was 194 and the bulbs lasted about 3 yrs in the car (from the time I put them in, until the time I got rid of her). I still had some left over from the first time - this is what I am using in my projectors right now.

That is cool. Yours might have a lower minimum voltage than mine. Mine would not light up no matter how I turned them in the original wiring.

I used an oval lens 194 bulb. From what I could see, it was the same as the original bulbs in them.

Did you just replace the LED on top of the 194 bulb socket or did you replace the whole thing?

Did you buy the LED's that had already been wired into the socket or were these lose LEDs?

If that was the route that you went, you probably should have left the LED's wired as they were. The LED's were originally wired that way with the resistor on them because they were sharing the 12 V. This gave each LED 4V of power. The LED's that I bought were for a 12 V aplication. That is why I had to re wire mine. Sorry for the trouble that this caused. You can PM me with any other issues that you have with it and I will try to help you.
