How To: Remove the Plastic Engine Cover!

I dont know if this is specific to a specific model and all, but i did this and i couldnt believe how much room it freed up, and what exactly was holding it on.

1. Pop the hood.

2. Remove the oil cap.

3. Lift on the plastic.

theres 1 pin holding it in (other than the oil cap), on the back left. it just pops off.

When you do this, it frees up a decent amount of room, and you can actualy see the engine, the engine runs about 5 degrees cooler (Thx SilverStreak), also makes it easier to do mods.

thats sweet, I think its just there as a sound deadener, but on the down side it does make the engine run a few degrees warmer

So there is an engine under all that plastic,,, good to know, lol

At least it's not as bad as the avalanche. I almost hit the ground I was laughing so hard when my buddy first popped the hood on his. Between the ugly facias, bumpers, and engine covers, there was like 2 feet of plastic between us and anything metal.

Also... check your engine temps with the cover off.

She'll run 5 degrees cooler.

Yet another good reason to ditch the cover.

It's funny **** for sure. After 30 mins of removing plastic we put a T.B. spacer, and CAI on his. And shocker it wouldn't fit without cutting away more,,,,, that's right plastic, lol

EDIT: His was like an 01 or 02 I think it was my fresh year of college, so it was at least 4-5 years ago. I wouldn't imagine they've gotten any better though

To answer your question about the cover, NO. About the same.

Keep the motor stock when removed and it won't have a need to sound louder.

How about the little spacer that makes the oil filler cap sit way too far up when the plastic engine cover is removed? It seems like its snapped in or something but I'm not trying very hard yet to remove it since I don't want to break it.

the spacer is just that...a spacer. its part of the engine. not the cover. trust me. where people **** up is, they try and take it off....without taking off the oil cap.

the oil cap is what holds it down in that section..

No, no, no, I mean after the black cover is off, it seems like the spacer should be removeable too, so the oil fill cap won't stick up so high. Like how it is on the Ecotec Cavaliers, for example.

Or maybe the cap is different and won't mount that way, but I saw a reference to it earlier here on the forum and never got a response when I asked about it.

the oil cap riser can be removed as well. It is a little tighter then the oil cap itself, but it does simply screw off with a quarter turn. Use some large plyers to get a hold of it if you can't spin it off by hand. Then your stock oil cap will fit back in the hole. OR you can get an aftermarket cap like mine...

I did this "mod" today. I was in a parking lot with a friend and I just had the urge to remove the cover. Engine certainly ran much cooler and it looks better as well. Hopefully soon I'll have an intake and the other hunk of plastic will be gone as well.

I noticed zero sound difference with the cover off.

technically yes...allowing the engine to stay cooler...no matter how little...will help performance....now, whether or not you notice it?...i doubt it

Edit: should be more helpful at 1/4 tracks cuz the engine will cool faster for the next run

Well I'm about 2 weeks into this "mod" and from what I've noticed there is still no difference in sound while moving, but idle is noticably louder. I think I might reattach the cover in the winter so that my engine might stay a little warmer between startups.
