That is a good point to make sure it isnt the fuse before replacing things. You can pretty much be sure that it isnt though if your power steering comes back on if you restart the vehicle.

when i start the car i have power steering and if i take off and slowly move the steering wheel side to side it doesnt go off, but when i leave it still thats when the power steering shuts off

 

subscribing i needto get a new power steering motor soon mine cuts out all the time

Thanks guys and good luck! Just keep your eyes peeled on ebay for a column or just the motor as some have done. The only thing I would watch out for is to make sure the place you buy from will take it back if its not working. I have had good luck with LKQ about returning DOA parts. Let me know if I can be of further help.

Hey, random question... Do i have to remove everything including the steering wheel to replace the steering column. The part i want to buy is just the column http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cobal...item5637509d5b

If i buy that, is it easy to take the old one out and put the new one in? Thanks a bunch...! (im new to this and want to make sure of everything before i take the plunge =P). Great how-to though!

Edit: Would i need a special tool to take the steering wheel off of the old column?

 

That part will work just fine to repair power steering issues. You do not need to remove the steering wheel. Just pull out your old column, swap the power steering units and put it back in. It is pretty easy. PM me if you need more instructions on the replacement.

Last time I went it, they said they didn't find anything wrong with my power steering. NOW, when I first start up my car, I can't move my steering wheel until I start moving. WTF? Does this mean my power steering motor is starting to go?

 

Were you having power steering issues and thats why you took it in? Do you get the POWER STEERING message on your driver information center?

 

No message yet.... but I was having before, my steering would get really hard to turn if I was just sitting still. Now I think it's goteen worse in the past week, everytime i start it up, it's really hard to turn the wheel.

 

Everything I have read so far of the power steering motor failure has had the "Power Steering" message in the info center. It could be in the very early stages of failure or it might be something in the front steering/suspension.

Yeah just for the part. Just get it and DIY. Dealers always mark up the part and then have a ridiculously high price on labor some people have been quoted 600+ easy. Takes 10 minutes to DIY.

 

Thanks for the info blue06. You didn't used to be able to buy just the motor itself, only the whole column.

I can't be sure if it is the motor itself, or the control unit that causes the failure, that is why I replaced the whole thing. It just seemed to me that if the motor failed, shutting the car off and on wouldn't make it start working again so I suspect the failure in my column was in the control unit.

For those wishing to only replace the motor, the process is very easy. Just remove the plastic panel underneath the column, then unbolt the two gold 12mm bolts. Unplug the electrical connection and replace. Below are a couple of pics of the removal process.

 

Mine had the same problem and when I restarted over and over it worked for a bit. I replaced just the motor and works perfect.

 

Sweet, thanks for the info HyperMuffin. I have also heard from several people that simply taking the cover off the motor and cleaning the inside with electrical parts cleaner has repaired the problem. Do you happen to have the part number for the motor that you could post?

 

I dont have the part number no. But yeah if you dont want to spend 170$ on a new motor then just remove the current one and clean the grease and dirty stuff from the motor and make sure its aligned right when you put it back in.

 

how do you know if its aligned right?

 

he is talking about bolting the splines from the column to the steering I shaft. Assuming you straightened the wheel before you removed the column, just make sure the wheel is straight before bolting it in. IF you mess it up, take the bolt out, try again. Although I think it is a pinch bolt and should be replaced when removed

 

it was over 700. i cant remember exactly but it's insane. mine went at about 55k

 

bought the power steering motor yesterday and took about 20 minutes to install. No problems today, no power steering warning. worked great
