Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage to your car, your electrical system and/or your stock lighting/HID system. It is recommended that you have at least basic wiring skills knowledge to do this mod. Do this mod at your own risk. Also this mod is for Cobalts whose daytime running light are in the headlamp position, NOT parking lamp position. The car used in this modification is a 2009 SS coupe.

Now that is out the way, let's get to business. This simple mod (dasaints bridge) will allow you to keep use of your DRLs with your HID kit without purchasing a higher price DRL module.

You will need:
Two pigtail fuses
Wire strippers/crimps
A piece of 16 gauge wire

First step is access your underhood fuse box




remove the DRL fuse located here




Remove left low beam fuse here




Insert the pig tail fuses ( don't forget to insert the fuse in them)





Strip about a 2 inch piece of 16 gauge wire at both ends


Insert the ends of the wire into each of the pigtails and crimp




Make sure your connections are tight


Now put you keys in the run position, put the car in reverse and lower the handbrakes (please do not try for the darwin award)

Your HID lights should now come on as DRLs

 

Looks good. Are those headlamps retro fitted with projector housings? Was that expensive to do?

 

Looks good but when i wired my lights they always turn on without doing that. But i did use quick connects to get some power for the halos if i remember correctly and i got the same result. Maybe yours is better because you dont have to use quick connects and maybe damage the wires of the lights

 

This but i remember reading somewhere that it might damage the ballast I think, because they are not running at full power.

To OP, what fuses you used? Same ones?
And what does the connection does?
Wouldn't you required to connect both low beam fuses?
Can one send enough power? ie 55w ballast?

 

I used a fuse tap on the DRL fuse slot and ran it to a relay to control a set of Morimoto XBALED halos that are behind my Apollo 2.0 flat shrouds.

 

Never heard of that but ive been running my ballast for around 2yrs no problems plus i always have my lights off during the day

 

Thanks man. Yeah. They are trs fxr with osram cbi bulbs. Setup ran about 700.
You are correct. But they are the fuse I pulled out. The pigtails I used took used 2 fuses so I used 2 per pigtail. The power for the drl fed into only the left low beam iirc. The connection send the full 12v directly to the low beams without the voltage drop. Yes it enough powah. My setup is 35w. I'm sure it would work still. The ballast still takes the 12v it just output 55w instead of 35.
running the ballast on anything less than 12 volts is not good. I kept mines off until I did this mod

 

Ok I got confused lol
The pigtails have 2x10 fuses each? (I think is 10) so a total of 4x10 fuses is used?
Can I use something that connect both and have a fuse in the middle?

I wouldnt. Doing that would take the low beam fuse out the loop which is used when the DRL is not running, unless you tap in to the fuse terminal with the low beam fuse in place...then I guess it would work. But that might be more work
Mine came on then went off iirc. The low power on the denso ballast I have didnt work. So I wasnt chancing it. I just provided the requested power
Might be my ballast or relay harness, not sure to be honest.

 

Oh ok, but then you are using 2 fuses of 10? Per slot correct?

Mine turns on too. But I read that ppl take out the drl fuse so they wont come up and wont damage the ballasts. I just turn it off manually even though mine stayed on if I forget to turn them off, I will see the reflection of them when im behind another car lol . But I knew about the issue that drl do not provide the sufficient power to the ballast and it my damage them. Im on morimoto ballasts.

 

Yup. I am. I tried using one fuse but it didnt work, so I popped in another one and vwallah!
