Iowa Speedway!
Iowa Speedway!
Ok, I am going to be going down to the Iowa speedway in Newton, IA along with a bunch of friends (hopefully) on the 28th of september. I just figured i would let you all know because I am going to be taking my balt down there and I am hopeing I won't be the only one *cough*hint*cough*
So if your interested Just post here and depending on the weather it will be on the 28th of september if the weather is bad it will be October 5th. This is a definate thing I will be there (i have already requested both days off) so I am hopeing to see some other cobalts there too. Any questions or comments post up
That speedway started up shortly after I graduated from ISU. I'd like to get there sometime as well but doubt it'll happen then... *shrug* have fun, let us know what u think of the track & stuff
I went and saw an Indy car race there over the summer (I think it was the Iowa Corn Indy 250). That was pretty sweet. Thats the first real race like that I'd ever been to.
What exactly is going on there on the 28th?

Isn't Newton just an 1/8 mile track? I don't know where you're at in Iowa but Cordova, Illinois is a nice 1/4 mile track and they run test & tune on Friday nights...
This Friday is Midnight Mayhem. They'll run the normal test & tune/bracket racing from 6:00 to 10:30 PM and then Midnight Mayhem from 11:00 PM until 4:00 AM. $25 to run both sessions all you want. I'd say there is usually about 3 or 4 SS/SCs there and a couple of Redlines. Probably over a 100 sport compacts and just as many domestics.

Drag racing, like at eddyville where the public can participate.
Yeah its an 1/8 mile track but there is speculation that if they get a big enough turn out through the summer for drag racing that they might build a 1/4 mile track in that area, i think the rumor is that they are trying to buy the runway that the old maytag plant used for its private jets and turn that into a 1/4 mile track. Thats just rumor but either way, it would still be fun to race and we MIGHT get a 1/4 mile track out of the deal too

To add on that Cedar Falls will be doing their midnight mania on Sept 1st. 8pm-1am. So plenty of weekend racing in the IA, IL area.
Again sorry about the hijack
I'll watch this thread as I've ran about 20 times at Newton against another Balt & a couple GTO's & just anyone that lined up.
I need more practice so I might hit it that night as this summer has just been to hot & I don't want to tear up my SS

Quick update:
I am still going to be there at newton on the 28th but here is the thing. My dad doesn't want me racing my cobalt so he wants me to race his car instead (1983 5.0 vert) but i might be able to talk him into letting me run the cobalt too. That kinda pissed me off because most of my friends don't have cars that will hang with the mustang so i am going to try and talk him into letting me take the balt so it would be "fair" to my friends

I'll talk to the wife & see if she wants to go as I'd like to go once more this year before I replace my tires as there close to bald & after I replace them I don't think I'll be spinning the new ones as often
I'll post back here as there is another balt that goes alot to & I need to talk to him about buying his old parts.
BTW my Name is Doug & I have a red ss with the Cobalt SS.net sticker on the front window.

Basically just bolt-ons, not too much more than that. Hope to see you there Doug. My name is Justin by the way and i drive a silver LS 2 door with tint. Turns out i WILL be bringing the cobalt and my dad will be driving the mustang, i might take a couple passes in the mustang (got 2 people i need to race with it) but mostly i will be in my balt.
It went pretty good. Only thing was i didn't get to race too much because the people i wanted to race didn't show til about 8 and they kicked us out at about 10:15 or 10:30 saying not enough people where lineing up =/ Seemed everyone was having problems hooking up, i know for a fact my dad's mustang hooks up better than that on the street, my dad mentioned that he thinks he gets better traction on the street and another mustang guy said "****, i know i do". I had fun though. I know where i will be every friday night next summer hahaha. I ran 10.6's pretty much the whole time, my first time was a 10.8 and i spun the tires all the way through first and alittle in second (launched at 2k). My best time was a 10.673 @ 67.24mph, turns out it was good enough to beat a 94 cougar with the 4.6L V8 and hang close to a super coupe (his best was a 10.1, average was about 10.5, 10.6). It was fun, but by far the most expensive 20 bux i will ever spend, because now i want to go faster hahahaha.
Ha ha ha yea it gets in your blood as I made the first 5 drag nights they had cuz after the first night I was hooked.
Times don't look to bad for a LS as 9.23 was my best but my reaction time was .392 & the track is not preped so it should be close to street conditions but I do know it's hard hook up there.
I was hoping to make it that night as I'm putting new tires on this winter & I really don't want to eat them up at the track so I will probably keep two of the old ones & get a couple rims just for drag racing
