By the looks of it and the general "let's show off" attitude around events like these I'm going to say the Cobalt driver thought he could beat the truck but found out the hard way that was not the case.

I completely lost you guys, by the time I turned around at the gas station you guys were gone, and I had no idea where you went. I just ended up going to quaker, apparently every one else decided to leave when we did, I had a bunch of other people follow me after I pulled out of the gas station, so we just went to quaker, I wasn't sure where you guys were going. I was good meeting you too, were gonna have to hang out sometime, when you can actually bring your car.

it was a terrible sight to see, the story is that he was behind a trail of people, just kinda following and went with the crowd.
I've caught myself just following the person in front of me before.
