Head unit wont work

Hey everyone so my brother got a 2007 Chevy cobalt for his 16th. We are trying to put an aftermarket head unit in as well as subs and new speakers. Well we have tried to hook up the red wire (acc) to everything we possibly could. I have seen online people do sun roof wipers etc he has no sun roof and the fuse tap we are using won’t stay in so I’m guessing there is no medal prongs in there to hold it. We have succeeded on getting the head unit to turn on like the wiper one but it’s like the head unit is to much power and the gauges like gas gauge go down and sit at the bottom as well as the little digital gage that says miles and etc just goes blank with lines. Take it out and it goes back to normal. But no headunit power. Have tried cigarette lighter does same thing acts like there is to much power. Does anyone what’s going on he’s really bummed he’s got all this stuff waiting to go in and nothing is working I have done some head unit and stuff in other vehicles before and it has never been like this I had a Tahoe way back when and I had to hook to cigarette lighter and just turn the head unit on and off every time. Any help would be great thank
