New owner from tn

Hi, all I decided to sign up after browsing the forums for 2 weeks looking for a SS after stumbling across one w 220k heavily modded, I figured they were dependable cars. I found 1 in Missouri with only 120k pretty stock besides k&n cai, long tube headers, and magna flow catback. Also shorty antenna, drilled and slotted rotors w/brembos, and I'm told a new clutch w/zzp flywheel 3k mileage ago. So I LOVE the car , and I never type in all caps lol. But I noticed I had a problem getting it in 1st a few times so I had to wiggle the shifter around to make it go (not forceful) but today I kinda pushed a little hard when it gave me trouble going in first and I heard a very very slight electric? Like whining sound kind of, no grinding. Please tell me it's not a synchro, I avoided picking up a SS with 110k because a synchro and would hate for this one to have the same problem as I truly love the car I've only had 4 days lol. Sorry for the long first post guys just worried

You're probably just noticing the sound for the first time, but our transmissions make some crazy sounds. A trick to get it into first is to shift into fifth, then come back to first. It works for me every time I have trouble getting it to go in.

Welcome, nice to see another Tennessean, where abouts you at? These cars are not friendly for getting into first, esp when slowing down. It will make a strange whine if you try to put it into first above 15mph bc the synchro is trying to mesh up. I try to be going less than 5mph before going into first. If your stopped and it doenst want to go I do the same as exninja and shift to another gear and back to first. Works just about every time. As he said the trans in these makes a lot of noises that aren't normal for other transmissions.

I don't know about the 4.05 LSJ version (I have TC as well), but I never downshift into first. If I'm moving I just go to second. I only use first from a dead stop. The synchros are the noisiest I've ever heard in a car, and they've always been that way. Sound hasn't changed in 100K miles.

Aw hell yea, nice to have another ss in this area. May hit you up to go to some of the events so I'm not always the only ss. TC is nice but you can always turbo the lsj. Lots of people have done it.

What's some mods recommended? I'm told it has a bad tune currently bc when I tap the gas in any gear it jolts kinda forward. I wanted 2.8 pulley w/ 80# injectors turned for e85 as it already gas k&n cai, long tube headers. I noticed everytime I start the car there's a rattle that may? Be from exhaust it only happens at low rpms when first started

Do you think it is the original 2.4?
What year... 06, 07?
The rattle is probably a very tired timing chain set until the oil fed tensioner tightens it up.

that's right. Sorry for confusion. How hard/expensive is timing chain? I'd hate for it to actually go out on me

Also I was told to remove a tube while the cars running, on the supercharger to see if the IC is operating, which tube? The small one facing the motor by itself?

your supercharger coolant fill. On stock cars its right in front of the supercharger, looks like you put coolant in there. you should have your car running and take off the cap. you should see coolant moving or burping. if not, your Supercharger pump is probably dead. Replace it ASAP so you dont heatsoak. ZZP sells them for decent price

you got an interceptor? Put it on Knock retard and Inlet Air Temp 2 or IAT2. thats how you can see if you are heat soaking

depends on mods, but usually you want your IAT2 to be no more than 40 degrees above ambient while cruising

sounds like your pump is dead. replace that ASAP. my wifes Cobalt would hit 180-190 IAT2s with a bad pump. it was pulling timing.

Added water and it was moving. I'd squeeze tube itd kind of smooth out the water about to get gas and see about temps. They were about 50+above ambient also pictured;pics after before/after stickers lol B4

It is normal with stock cooling to see iat2s at 160 while idling on 100 degree days. The real test is to see what they are when cruising. Should be 20 to 25 over ambient as mentioned. When you run wide open throttle, it'll creep up. You may even see 150 on a long pull.

I lived in jackson from Nov if 16 till Feb. Moved back down to south Alabama. Kind of wish I was still up there though

Good looking lsj
