old srt4 owner to soon to be LNF

Hey everyone,

It's been a longgg time since ive been on this forum let alone in the turbo world. I joined this forum a few years ago bc a good friend of mine had an lnf and I used to cruise the columbus cobalt meet with him in my black srt4. Became friends with a few of the guys on the forum and joined up just to keep in touch. I was in one of the cobalt videos that mudcrutch did. Since then, I've moved to PA and lost touch with many of them. I sold my SRT4 and bought a cherokee and got into the offroad seen. I'm currently and Off-Road mechanic and build lifted trucks. The turbo bug never let go though. I've finally got to the point where I need to get back into another turbo car. I was debating on a new focus ST but theyre still a bit pricey and honestly, underpowered for the money. They should have stepped up their game to at least 300hp but i can understand the need for controllable power and how most people cant handle a high powered fwd car. In my search I stumbled upon a pretty damn clean 09 SS sedan. I've always been a fan of four doors (for more ****** of course ) Its a G85 car too. Im picking the car up on saturday and just wanted to come back to the forums and see what's been going on. My old srt was 386whp and 400wtq. I'm not looking to get the cobalt to that level but i will want to do most of the bolt on mods and stick to the stock turbo.

I've got injen intercooler pipes and some B&G lowering springs ready to go already. I figured I'd browse the forums and see what you guys have been doing to these cars while keeping it very streetable. My SRT was a bit intense for the street and I don't want to do that again. My goal is about 300hp and 350trq. Any advice would be great! I don't know the cobalt world so help me out guys, like which vendors to go through and which parts to stay away from. I definitely need to know who to go through for a tune since i will be putting a turboxs bov on as well.

Thanks guys!

With simple bolt ons and an HPtune, you will be able to easily achieve your 300/350 wants. If you decide you want more, you can go e85. But for ease of use and reliability I say just do a nice 93 tune and have fun.

I've seen a lot of people talking about trifecta tunes. Are these any good? HPtuners is a possibility though. Thanks!

Trifecta is a canned tune in a sense. There isn't much logging going on, you basically just a tune from Vince, load it on and drive. The complaint about that is that in alot of cases it is not dialed in as much as it can be. With HPTuners most tuners will remote tune you until your car is perfect. In most cases you are going to yield higher numbers with HPT because they are more aggressive tunes

Gotchya. Well seems like a better choice to go with HPT. Thanks for the advice. This is exactly what im looking for. These cars have been around a while so I'm sure there are some pro's floating around on the site.

I know this, I said in my post the complaint is from people that don't spend the time having it dialed in as much as they should

appreciate all the advice guys! I actually got the car yesterday and had a blast driving it around but it's lacking the "spin the tires whenever I want power" I was so used to with the SRT. So maybe I will be shooting for mid 300's for power rating. I've been searching around and can't quite find exactly what im looking for. More or less, a list of what parts are pretty much required to get a car to the mid 300's. I think i might be sending these Injen intercooler pipes back just to get a lower IC pipe for the MAF relocation and an upper with a BOV flange. So anyone that can give me some info on what direction to head in as for parts it'd be greatly appreciated.

Pics are to come of the car!

Stock turbo with E85 or a turbo upgrade will get it where you want. If you go turbo upgrade I would say to get the zzp EFR turbo. Then some 80 lb injectors and full turbo back 3 in exhaust.

I'd really like to stick with the stock turbo but not looking for e85 either.

Stock turbo, get a nice tune on 93 with supporting bolt on's and you will be happy. Enjoy the car

K&n Sri,upper charge pipe, intercooler ,and catless downpipe with your choice of trifecta or hp tune will get you your numbers on pump gas.there are countless threads on hp vs trifecta read a couple and you will get the drift basically trifecta has a few more features like esp and switchable tunes where hp is more likely to yield better numbers and dyno graphs. Also try looking at the dyno thread it basically has the list your looking for parts/dyno numbers.

If 350 is the number you're wanting, you're going to have to use meth, e85 or a turbo upgrade. Full bolt ons with pump gas is roughly 300hp and 320-350lb ft of torque, depending on the tune and dyno.

Now post pics of your turbo neon and Cobalt SS.

I have the basic bolt-on setup with a Trifecta tune, about 300whp, and I can't put my foot to the floor until about 55mph (in second) without my wheels spinning. So if that's what your looking for look no further haha.

I just got an AEM cai today so it's a start. I certainly need more power so if 300 is the number to remain stock turbo and pump gas I'm fine with that. I don't want to heavily modify this car. It's a rare find and hasn't been molested yet. Reliability is a key factor here. I just replaced the lca bushings with moog's bc they were completely shot and making a ton of banging noise. Ill post pics of my SRT and the cobalt as soon as I can
