Texas Balt

Hi guys. I just bought an 05 ss sc and absolutely love it. Needs a bit of work. I'm in Bryan/College Station.

I'm new to cobalts, new to driving stick, new to tuning in general. But I'm learning a lot from these forums.

Unfortunately, theres a lot of things to fix before i can look at performance parts:
Interior door panels, roof liner, spare tire and bracket, shifter, power mirrors, locks, sunroof, bodywork (dings/scratches), and ill need a new paint job. Also, missing keyless entry remotes.

But the engine runs great. I can easily forget all those other things when im driving around.

Only drawback is that it is loud. Ridiculously loud. As far as i can tell, everything is stock except the exhaust. And just a new exhaust shouldnt make that much if a difference over a stock cobalt ss/sc, I'd think.

It might have a catless exhaust. There is another member on here by the name of TheWafflesAreburnt that lives in college station/Bryan area.

Thanks, guys.

I have seen a few cobalts, but only 2 other SS. One yellow (never seen driver) and one black (female driver).

My balt is currently badges as a Cobalt LT (previous owner), all SS badges removed, side skirts removed... so you may not recognize it as an SS, lol. For some reason, they removed the door molding from one side only... so I'm waiting for it to warm up so I can get that off (already have the fishing line and goof-off ready).

It's also black. I'll take some pics sometime soon to put up. She's in pretty rough shape atm, but she pulls hard still.

I'll get some pics up as soon as I can.

I checked the VIN and it is a SS/SC. It's a stock blower and the engine badge is the stock "supercharged". SS seats. The only thing I can think of was the original owner was going for a sleeper, but the guy after him (and right before me) just neglected it and ran it into the ground.

You talking to me or OP? OP is in College Station, I am in Houston.

My balt is not an SS. It's an LS, but I love it anyway

I joined a few weeks ago, seems like there is a few texas balts here. A meet would be sweet.
I've only seen one other SS around me, it was a red coupe but I've only seen it one time. Small town I live in I guess is to blame lol

Might not be the stock rad. And it's missing the front lip so is it possible it was in an accident in the front?

front lip and side shirts are gone. I'm assuming there was an accident. Hood is OEM but from a 2007 and the drivers door is from a 2006 (I could have mixed up those years tho). And the engine is so clean, that I have to believe it was replaced.

As I mentioned before, the previous owner abused and neglected it. I'm still finding stuff to fix. The oil was a sludge when bought and when we went to change it, some idiot had siliconed the oil drain plug in place. Then another idiot completely stripped the bolt trying to take it off. I ended up having to take it to walmart (they had to buy an extractor kit to get it off). Well, I sent the wife because I knew they'd be more willing to help her than me. Oil change took an hour and a half, and I paid less than 8 bucks (used my oil and filter).

I'm still waiting to replace all the fuses and hope that clears up a lot of the electrical problems. Debating going with the EZID ones that light up when they blow. Make them easier to identify.

I have yet to actually get under there again and try and identify the exhaust manufacturer and check the cat/muffler situation.

EDIT: also the front bumper is a little off where it meets the fenders, so it leads me to believe even more there was some damage.

Well your not alone, mine was in a crash aswell, and need repairing. But I'm sure everything can and will get fixed. One step at a time. I'm also here to help.

So I finally got out there and looked long and hard at my exhaust. I'm assuming here, but judging by the weld lines just below the cat, and the seeming lack of a bolted connection between the down pipe and exhaust, I'd say the previous owner gutted the cat and straight piped it. So the only way to upgrade would be header/downpipe/catback exhaust. I originally intended to do the exhaust separate, but doesn't look like I'll be able to.

Also, I've noticed that when I am driving in fourth gear with my hand resting lightly on the shifter, I can feel it slide, almost like it will pop out of gear. It goes about halfway to popping out and stops. I was planning on getting a short throw shifter as the first upgrade/fix. Would the slippage be caused by the shifter or the cable clamp? Or will I have to replace the cables as well? If so, I'm assuming it would be better to do all at one time.
