So, I currently have an 05 base model. I'm hoping I'll be able to turbocharge it... but at the same token, would it just be more cost effective (and faster) to buy an SS?

 

Yes a lot more cost effective to just start with an SS not to mention once you have one with under 1k in mods you would be at more horsepower than the stock engine on the base model could handle. I wouldn't recommend upgrading the base model at all if you have an 05-06 because only Trifecta tuning is an option.

 

QFT, just buy the faster model.
The suspension, seats, etc is better as well.

 

There are 2 reasons to do a base model: fuel mileage and insurance rates. Fuel mileage isn't too different, and lets face it, you're driving a sports car. Fuel mileage isn't a concern. However I'm driving a base G5 and getting charged almost as much as most sports cars do for insurance because the G5/Cobalt base is considered a sport compact, and all the recalls means insurance hates them. As a teenager I just wasn't willing to pay over 3 grand a year for insurance and collision. If this isn't an issue, go SS! More power, better suspension, more fun!

SS is an all around better car and was purpose built for boost, just go get one of those
