Actually NO SS came from the factory with the 427. The COPO ( ZL-1 cars were actually considered in the COPO group ) cars were teh only way to get a 427 in the camaro, and they were all base model cars, with exception to some having vinyl rooves.
The 1st gen Z/28 cars ... from 67 t0 69 all had the 302, as well as all were sticks too. You had choices of carbs, and that was it. There was the sinlge 4 barrel and the "DZ" 302, which had the crossram intake with staggered twin 4 barrel carbs. ( Thinks 426 Hemis and max wedges )
As far sa the debate on trims and motors....
The LS2 is going to become a "base" motor for V8's. The G8, Trailblazer SS both use it and will for some time.
The LS2 in Camaro trim is rumored to have Active fuel management, so that will be a base model kinda point for the V8 trimmed cars.
IF ... BIG IF... there is more than 2 trim choices, and there's a Z, I agree, it will get the lesser V8, most likely the LS3. The SS will maybe get the LS7 ( which is rumored to be the BASE C7 motor ).
By the time the car comes out... much will have chnged globaly, so I wouldn't want to guess and put $$ on anything until 3 months before rollout.

Its the l76 or the ls2 iirc
I was looking from a price point, the old Z28s were more expensive than the SS's in Gen 1.
The LS2 Will not be in the new Camaro. 2007 was the LS2's final production year. LS3 production has already began and the LS2 is a just a memory now.
The Camaro will either get an L76 (6.0 found in the G8 which has DoD) or it will get the 430hp LS3. The G8 is also getting the 362hp L76. No LS2 for either car, dead production motor.
I don't forsee a hand built LS7 going into any car sub $50,000 MSRP, since the motor alone is nearing $16,000. Good reason why the new CTS-V (2009) is rumored to be $60k+
only real Hi Po V6 GM has in it's lineup is the 3.6L from the G6 GXP which is rated at 252hp. So I'd say with some exhaust work, itll be rated at 260hp.
LS6=no longer in production. 2005 was it's final year, when it was in the CTS-V. It was a carry over engine from 2004, when LS2 engine development was being ramped up and the V was a limited production. The V switched to the LS2 for 2006 and 2007.
LS2=no longer in production. I bet the mid model Camaro gets the L76 (6.0L 360hp or the LS3 (6.2L 430hp)
SS = we'll wait and see, if the mid model gets the L76 then I'll bet this will be an LS3 car. I doubt the bean counters at GM will drop in 500+hp monster engine for the Camaro. Especially since the LS7 is a $16,000 motor, and the concept LS9 motor looks to be reserved for the Corvette SS only.
Brian:
Little bit of specs on the L76 for you.
It's mainly used in Truck applications, but the G8 will be getting it.
6.0L V8 362hp. What's nice about it is, it has the famed L76 intake manifold, and the "L92" (6.2L heads) already on it.
Where it differs from the LS2 is, it has DoD technology already built in, and a much more mild cam shaft.
40hp down from a stock LS2, but swap it in with a nice cam, and it will make 30-35hp more than your standard LS2

It is also .6 points of compression lower then a ls2

Tho her best previous et was 13.7 with a best trap of 109
thats due to the L92 heads. Just mill them to 67mm, that will bring your comp right back up to LS2 levels.
G8's motor is the L76
You might know this, has GM decided on which V8 motor will be in the Camaro?
I know the concepts are running around with LS2's but we know those won't make production.
RAR, finally found some of my Dragon photos that people were taking.

That and the two after that. That was our little convoy of Paul, me, and Melissa. That's just the first day, I'll have to keep browsing and see if I can find the ones from the other days.

I have been on 5thgen.org recently and have been reading about all that they know or speculate is going to happen with the camaro. They baiscally say the same engine selections we have talked about here, but would like to see a ZL-1 that is supercharged, if that doesnt happen "which more than likely wont" then it would be nice to have a 500+ hp supercharged V8 for competition for the GT500
I mean bob Lutz said in a conference that no mustang will ever be faster than his camaro, so who knows

You'll never see a factory ZL1 ever
Its on average low 13s.
I doubt GM will mass produce a Camaro to beat the limited production GT500.
Unless they bring out a sub 5,000 car per year hipo camaro, but I have no doubt in my mind they will be faster than standard mustang gt's.
Hell, the GTO already has that taken care of

Yea im not worried about GT's at all. But someone on the 5thgen.org said that... well heres the quote from the thread
"I just got my may 07 issue of Hot Rod today. The Cover story reads "Glory Days" and has the Shelby, the Vert concept and the new Viper. Anyway the article reads how Motown Muscle is making a comeback and is giving a breakdown of the new era muscle wars. The part I found interesting is as follows, (I couldn't find the article online yet so I'll just type and quote it)
".......However, GM insiders have blabbed to HOT ROD the range of potential powertrain options for the new Chevy ponycar. There will be two V-6 choices and at least three V-8's, including a 550hp version of the supercharged 6.2L V-8 for a high-content Z28 model. Sources say there will be two base V-8's, one stick and one automatic, both of them over 400 hp."
A 550 hp Supercharged Z28? Oh yes make mine black and a vert!"
And they said the convertible was like 3800lbs or something

I doubt it, at least not till release. I'm betting on a 350-400ish V8 and a V6. pending on sales, then we might see a hipo in a few years
but can you take down a new gt? they run 13.50s stock. Stock for Stock I think not.
99-04 GT's could run 13.8-14.2 with a decent driver
there will be 1 V8 at release. Depending on sales there will be a second V8, within the second or third model year. That has been confirmed

Stock for stock, not from a dig. Might be able to hold up on a roll. But for most guys here that have probably a 2.8 and lower could run a GT from a dig and be competitive. From a roll, stock for stock i think we could pull away slightly. From a roll with any mods S2 equivalent or higher we would murder a new GT. Even if the GT has some mods we would still murder it. IIRC, both wes and dan were taking down LS1's with ease last summer. Any LS1 is still faster than the new GT's.

now youre talking modding vs stock. not the same arguement.
You do realize the 05+ GT's are running 12.70s with just intake and exhaust, and mild tuning
You may catch a bad driver here and there, but this is also assuming equal driving
come get some
