Tint and Cops in NY
Tint and Cops in NY
I was wondering if anyone gets bothered for either 20% or 35% in NY seeing that legal is 70%. I'm asking because I'm debating between the two but I rather not spend 170 on tint and 300 in tickets lol.
i live in si,ny and i have 35%, i have yet to get pulled over, on my 1st car i had 20s all aorund and i only got pulled over 3 times in 1 year, and never got a ticket, i said yeah i know they're illegal, it was the worst birthday gift i ever got and the cop would smile and say take it easy...then again i met the only 3 nice cops over here
I drive back and forth to NY all the time and have never had a problem. I split my residence in NY and RI and have been pulled over in both as well as MA and never had a problem with my tint.
The 70% that you are referring to is for light emittance, meaning that you can have 30% tint on your car. I have 20% on my car and have yet to have a problem. You'll notice that the color of the car and the interior also have an effect on how dark the tint appears. Also, the kind of tint that it is. If you are that worried about it just get 30% all the way around.

I used to have 15% on my cavy.Whenever i would drive on the sprain/taconic,i would get nailed by a county cop or a trooper and they would get me for tint and exhaust. It came down to a point when i would pass by a cop that had someone pulled over and they would come out and go after me.I got sick of that **** after being pulled over like 10 times,so i removed the tint. And one night i was driving home on the sprain,i pass by a cop and he comes after me.I was like whats the problem officer?hes like ur tints are too dark.Im like really?I rolled my windows up and asked him what tint.Hes like oh,looks around my car and gave me a ticket for a crack in my winshield.Moral of the story, westchester county cops and state troopers are ******.They knew my car,but now that i have the cobalt, they dont bother me no more, lol.

I had 15/35 on my old Z24 and never got pulled over. I got pulled over for excessive speeding and the cop didn't even mention my tint.. lol. The cobalt I am kind of reluctant to tint it. I always get cops who give me the staredown as I drive past them. I'm content with the factory tinted windows for now.
Q. Can I have tinted windows on my car or truck?
According to the NY State Vehicle and Traffic Law under section 375-12, if you have a 1992 or later model year passenger car or station wagon, the side windows adjacent to AND behind the operators seat must have a light transmittance of SEVENTY PERCENT or greater. If you own a vehicle classified by the EPA as a truck or light truck ONLY the area BEHIND the operators seat may be tinted with a tint less than seventy percent. These types of vehicles include but are not limited to: SUVs, Mini Vans, Full size vans and Pick up trucks. All types of vehicles 1992 or later, the windows adjacent to the operators seat must have a light transmittance of seventy percent or greater. If your vehicle is older than a 1992 it must conform to a older V&T section which was a light transmittance of greater than thirty five percent. This section was first written in the 1985 era.
What is light transmittance? If clear glass has a light transmittance of 100 percent, than any type of tint or film that is placed on the glass to impede the outside light from transmitting through the glass to the inside would lessen the light transmittance. If half of the light from the outside is blocked by the tint then the light transmittance would be fifty percent.
Rear Windows: The rear most window can be tinted to any percentage IF the vehicle is equipped with side rear view mirrors on both sides.
Exemptions: There is a exemption for medical reasons. More information can be obtained at any DMV office.
How do the officers measure the tint? Some patrols carry a tint meter that accurately measures the light transmittance.

nope he pulled me over for tint. well i didn't have an inspection sticker but i had one of thos 10 day paper in the front but there's no way he could have seen that from where he was.
Not worth the pain in the ass it is to get pulled over. I had mine at %35 and got pulled over. I had to remove the tint and go to court. Got only a fix it ticket. But It's not worth it, $200 for the tint, Getting yelled at by my mom, having to drive to southampton, go get the stuff to get the tint off and then spend the day waiting in line at a court. Just get the back done and the rear windows.
