you're comparing totally different times. when mario 3 came out, there was nothing else like it.

I really don't like being restricted to only certain systems (see other post)
I'll post some rare and sometimes un-heard of goodies along with some other personal favorites so you guys can keep your mainstream stuff fresh.

Atari 800:
M.U.L.E.
Mail-Order Monsters
Archon I & II

Atari 2600:
Crystal Castles
Demon Attack
Keystone Capers
Pitfall I & II
River Raid

Sega Master System:
Choplifter

Nintendo:
Castlevania I, II, III

Genesis:
Shining Force I & II
Gunstar Heroes
Chakan

3DO:
Twisted (hilarious)
Slayer

Philips CDi:
j/k (NONE)

Saturn:
Dragon Force
Guardian Heroes

Dreamcast:
Armada (Asteriods + Multiplayer + RPG)

PC:
Loom
Moraff's Stones (the other Moraff's games were ok, but stones was addicting)
Betrayal at Krondor
The Secret of Monkey Island (all games in series, actually)
Phantasmagoria (Ok, it sucked, but it was fun for 3 hours)
Under a Killing Moon (Had to get into it to understand why)
Commander Keen (all)
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Wolfenstein 3D (the original)

Ok, there's enough for now.
