now I'm left with ugly sticky residue on my freshly washed car.

Nooo it was re-attached to a wingless LS trunk. I know it didn't fall off on it's own, they had to pull it off but luckily it was on in such a way that they didn't scratch it.

 

Goto Advance Auto and pick up these plastic razor things and some 3M Adhesive Remover (YES, get the 3M and not some other ****). Soak it in the adhesive remover then scrape it off with the plastic razor nice and easy Heat sometimes help!
