Check out my rack!
sorry, I had to put that title :) heres just a few pics of the yakima Q tower system from a recent camping trip to FT. Stevens in OR. these worked great, the kayak and bike held stedy all the way up to 90 mph ;)

so how many inches do you have between the towers? i went with 16", which is what the book said to do.
|

yo SIIICK! I need to get one of these for winter so I can show off my new pair of Line Chronics ;)
|
nice um rack
|
and btw, this rack with the kayak and bike kills the mpg's with it on I only got 24.4 when I usually get 30 or so.
|
QUESTION!
I just ordered the yakima rack system. What are you using to hold the kayak on there? I'm looking at the dealer info lookup for the 2dr cobalt but it doesn't say anything about putting a kayak on there. |
well remember as long as you have the base q tower system, any yakima accessory works
|
Yep that's what I ordered. I just wasn't sure if it would be OK, because looking at the yakima dealer guide for the 2dr Cobalts it doesn't list much in the way of watersports. Only skis and bikes.

I have the J-cradles which work great! I think I can fit 3 kayaks on the rack if I use all J-cradles. but they have alot of options for kayaks and stuff.
My friend and I are probably going to go with the Perception 9.5, since it's on sale at EMS for $299. I plan on fitting both of them onto the roof of my car, lol. |
Yay for racks....yes mpg sucks...with 2 bikes on standup carriers, its surprisingly about the same as towing a jetski lol

Sweet, 2 will fit no problem with j-cradles! I got my kayak for 300 with paddle, its a Main stream streak
Do you guys leave the racks on the car when you're not using them, or do you take them off? Seems like the latter would be a pain in the balls. |

yes, Im leaving mine on for at least the summer. |
Mine comes off most of the time. Even just the base system knocks 3-4 mpg off when cruising 60+. Hate wasting gas...

I can't wait to see the mileage change after driving down the northway with two 50lb kayaks on the roof. lol
|
It's gonna be ugly!
|
haha if you want to enjoy your kayaking trip you wont check the MPG... lol
|
I got my Yakima base rack on today.
Seems pretty sturdy, I mean if I REALLY rip on it it'll move around a tiny bit because of the soft bottom part, but it's definitely not coming off. I have it clamped down pretty good, I think between the 1st and 2nd notch in the tower. The crossbars even have a tiny bow to them from clamping it down lol. I'm getting my kayak tomorrow, and probably the Thule J-carriers since no local sporting goods stores seem to carry the Yakima. Overall I'm pretty satisfied thus far. It gives the car a tough look that's for sure. Of course the real test will be when I actually place things on the crossbars. |
yep i love the look it gives the car :) post pics!
|
yes, pics now! I just carried two kayaks today, it works great! I think I can fit Three kayaks on using the J-cradles if I slant the kayaks all the same way.

Hahah. I love this thing. I finally own a useful automobile. |
awesome!
|
lol I love it. I re-routed the bow and stern tiedowns so it's running under the front of the hood by the windshield and then inside the trunk. Before it was kinda tugging on my rear bumper trim and the hood kinda pinched the line on the edge, but now it's purrrfect.

I think I am going to move the rear rack back a few inches. I have it at 16" like Yakima recommends, but I could easily move it back and it will mount the same way as it does now. Hell I could probably move the front bar a little forward as well.
|
or u could buy a truck lolz
|
Maybe when I graduate from college. Right now the Cobalt will serve as the ski/kayak carrying rig
|
FALSE ADVERTISING!!!:thumbsdow

I have the Yak rack on my '10 SS/TC and I love it. Only problem is that the clips rub against the car above the door and have chipped the paint. I have repainted the areas with touch up paint and such so it doesn't rust. The rack seems to move every once in a while which causes the clips not to sit on the gutter evenly. Anyone else have any problems like this or solutions?

Mine hasn't moved yet. I have it clamped down pretty tight, though.
Are you a coupe or a sedan, brtnsnw4? The Sedan might flex more which is why it'd move around after a while. |
