Do you have any suggestions for me though?
use a higher iso to get a higher shutter speed, trying to maintain at least 1/60 for close ups or 1/125 for zoomed images. I don't think your camera has mechanical shift stabilization but if it did then the speed can be up to half that and you can still get a good image.

you don't need a tripod to take leveled pictures. since you have a P&S camera it might be more difficult to take a straight shot but still very doable. i've used P&S cameras most of my life and my pics aren't noticeably crooked.

i'm not familiar w/ the editing program you have but see if you have a straightening tool. that would really help you out a lot for your crooked pics. P&S shoot cameras can take sharp crisp pictures so don't think you can't simply because you own one. if you can't take crisp, sharp pics w/ a P&S chances are you won't be able to w/ a DSLR. play around w/ the settings and more importantly read the owner manual that came w/ it/ most cameras have them and are very useful for beginning tips. which modes are you shooting w/?

ftr, i don't own a $500 nikon camera.

change the senstivity level to something other than auto, for the low light day shots perhaps iso 200 for shots with less light maybe close to dusk or perhaps in the shade try iso 400 this is only needed if your shutter speed is slow though so otherwise keep the ISO to 100 or less to avoid noisy images.

also for the close up shots use the best macro mode your camera has, using the normal focus mode up close will not give you good results

lots of new semi-pro p&s cams have in camera sensor shift stabilization but I agree a tripod or monopod is still going to be a good call.

How is that not true David?

I would rather shoot a still image on a tripod at 1/8 f5.6 ISO 100 over 1/125 f5.6 ISO 1600 any day, ESPECIALLY when using a P&S where higher ISO's generate even more noise. Unless you need to freeze motion and need that higher shutter, use the slow shutter and a tripod with a low ISO.

if you want to get serious about photography, when shoots stills always always always always always always always always always always always always always always always always always always always always use a monopod/tripod.

raising iso should be the last thing you do to get proper exposure. noise = yuck

I was just using the autoexposure mode that the camera has cause i'm not familiar with the whole iso and ev thing yet.

it should, yes. most tripod mounts are the same.

this 60" tripod is even cheaper.
