Exclamation ***URGENT*** Car started by itself

hey guys,

so ill start off with i just got back from a 1000km drive. i parked my car out in front of my house. i then went out and ran some errands and parked it again. no issues.

about half an hour later my mom yells that my car is on my lawn. so i ran outside and sure enough it was. i originally thought someone driving by hit it up onto my lawn and they took off, but there's no damage.

i then thought it just rolled forward, but then i remembered and saw that i left it in gear. then i saw a mark on the sidewalk where the tire had spun meaning the engine had been running.

as you can see in this pic, my car was way up onto my lawn

Name:  58CE5FF2-74E3-4CD1-A872-D78B4693AE9C-9149-000006DC7165B972_zpsaa1977f1.jpg

and in this pic you can see the tire mark

Name:  F0CD0786-D5C5-452F-B1A5-BFBF04E18F52-9149-000006DC77673B03_zpsa6cca5bc.jpg

so we then boosted the car, and when i connected the jumper cables the car lurched forward. i hopped in and started it and it sounded like ****. sounded metal on metal and i turned the car off and there was a clicking until the car died again.

so my question is, is WTF happened haha. the car started while in gear, so something had to of tripped the starter into starting.

good thing i turn my wheels or my car wouldve ended up at the end of my street and probably crashed.

so is your question why the car started or what the metal on metal is?

I think Iight have heard of this a while back...
but not for some time.

I'd suggest playing it safe, and removing your spare tore cover, and when parking, disconnect the battery;
If you have an aftermarket auto start (GM never installed auto start in manual cars) - It could be goobered, if there is no auto start your ignition tumbler (they have known problems) could be at fault.

the metal in metal could be indicitive of the ignition tumber too - our cars have a thing where the starter (automatically) stays engaged till the ECM senses that the car has started;
if the ignition tunbler is to blame, it could circumvent the automated part where the ignition turns off - and the metal on metal is where the starter is continually going even after the car is running.

Have you checked the ignition for the signs of being messed with? A lot of car thieves in your area?

everything looks fine. i suspect a short somewhere. possibly a relay in the fuse box?

i really have no clue how to go about diagnosing it.

when i went to pull the car into the garage, when i turned the key off the car died, then started again for a few seconds then died again. its so weird

good thing i have that hill on my lawn or my car wouldve hit my house haha

please say that you disconnected the battery.

I'd call a GM dealership - as I think this might fall under the ignition tumbler recall.

i'd lean towards the ignition tumbler as well... wierd though because the clutch pedal needs to be engaged for it to start usually.

sorry not any help here just wanted to post that this is crazy

Battery is out of the car. When I hooked it up to my charger it kept flicking on and off. I might need a new battery.

I called GM and they said they would call back. I just dunno how I'm gonna get the car there cause I don't wanna ruin anything

It seems like the clutch safely switch would kick on and not allow the car to start. That being said, remote starters can bypass it. Sub'd for info.

Dealership wants to look at it.

Maybe a bad battery could do it? A weird voltage coming out of it might screw the computer up?

I'm having my battery tested tonight.

alright i found the issue and fixed it.

it was a bad crank relay.

i swapped the crank relay and the run crank relay and nothing happened, then when i swapped them back the starter was going. so i went to the stealership and got a new relay, plugged it in and nothing happened, started the car and it sounded normal and ran perfect.

i got a new battery as well since mine was toast.

i will be taking this up with GM as i feel it is a safety issue if a relay causes the starter to turn on when a car is in gear. had my wheels not have been turned someone could have seriously been hurt

Here's a video of what happens

this doesn't make sense

The crank relay should only come into play with telling the ECM where the crank is (via a non symmetrical keyway) which in turn triggers spark;

If the Crank Position Sensor goes bad, the car won't fire;
The CPS only has hot wires when the ignition is turned on - which is what I still suspect is your underlying issue.

ok, my browser didn't show the video till after I posted(?);
this still doesn't make sense.

Mark's orange car had his engine side fuse box go bad;
I would still have someone look at this - because in my mind's eye, that relay should NOT be having power go to it till you turn the ignition...

still doesn't make sense.

To further upon my last post/ppoint is this;

That relay should not be "hot" till;
1) ignition is turned on.
2) clutch pedal pushed in.

You can turn on the ignition, but without hte clutch pedal pushed in, the power is not supposed to be sent to the starter...

The "ghosts" post might have been on to something.

Sounds like he got it fixed to me. Maybe you guys missed the part about the relay being BAD, as in not doing what it's suposed to do. Somehow the contacts in the relay either got shorted by moister, or stuck together. The one side on the power is battery hot. The other side goes to provide power to the start solinoiid to engage the starter. The PCM controls the Relay based on inputs from the ignition switch position and the clutch pedal switch. If the relay contacts are shorted somehow then I could is it doing what it was doing.
