30k Miles/ Fried Altnerator/ 800$/ WTF?!

Hello everyone,

The other night my alternator crapped out on me while driving, gradually killing all the gauges and electrical and eventually the engine as well. I dropped it off at Pontiac and they wanted $800 to give me a new alt or $500 to rebuild the old one. Now i know thats a rip, so I brought it back home on a flatbed and here she lies.

I can get a new alternator for $230+tax from a mechanic friend of a friend. I was wondering tho, isnt this still considered expensive? I thought alternators were around $150? Is there any way i can get this for cheaper- perhaps rebuilding mine myself? I thought all they did was open it up and change the main component anyway... which i assume is copper wire...

Thanks

considering it's a newer car, 230 isn't terrible, usually that's close to most with a core, so it comes close to 150. You may be ab le to get yours rebuilt. look in the phone book for small motor repair, if they can't I'm sure they can point you in the right direction

Is the base warranty coverage different in Canada? In the US it would be covered under the 3/36 warranty. Of course, with an '07 you could be past 3 years.

This is my question.
3/36k = New parts until the cows come home...

I'm almost at 4 years boys

I found an alternator off eBay for $100 plus $50 for priority intl shipping... it's remanufactured with a 1 year warranty. Anyone buy an alternator off eBay? Should I trust them?
