is 5w-20 ok?
Today I had to get some things for my wifes car and some oil for mine. I had my wifes car on the brain and without thinking, I grabbed 5w-20 which is what her car runs. I didn't realize that's what I had until I had half of it in. I have an 08 ss/tc and I want to know if this will hurt the engine... I really don't want to spend $40 on another jug of oil.
I don't think anything catastrophic will happen, lulz. If you can, just drain the oil and use it in the wife's car.
Go to Wal-Mart and grab 5 quarts of 5w-30. Don't forget the oil filter as well.

Whether its catastrophic or minor I don't want anything to happen. Might as well be safe and get some more unless someone can chime that knows first hand it won't hurt anything. And it won't go in the wifes car cause hers takes syn blend and has since bought new in 07.
You may not have any problem with your car but you have to check cause if GM recommend 5w30 and your using a different grade of oil (5w20, 0w20, 15w40 lol....) it may void the powertrain warranty. But im talking about ss/sc and ss/tc i don't know maybe ss 2.4 need to be run with 5w20
Now on the TDI forums they have data supporting why the walmart oil isn't any good. not they use recycled oil so it must be bad.
Oils have multi viscosity ratings. The 5w is the rating when the oil is cold and the second number is the rating when the oil is at 100 degrees. The lower the number the thinner the oil. The oil the op bought would have the same viscosity in the cold as a 5w30 but the oil will be thinner at operating temperatures since its a 20 and not a 30.
