So just last night I tried to recharge my a/c unit with a freon unit my dad bought some time ago for his avalanche. Everything appeared to be fine though the gauge was never accurate. After a few long pumps of the stuff I decided it should be done so I had the gf go to the drivers side which was open as the car was on to see if it was cold. She got to the door and gagged from some kind of smell coming from the car. Well being in front of the car I didn't smell anything strange so I walk over and "holy ****" it smelled like some type of strong chemical ... maybe oil or possibly the cleaner agent in the freon can.

Well after letting it sit and pulling it out of the garage the strong smell went away but you could still smell a bit from the a/c so I let it sit some more. Eventually I decided I should drive the car with the a/c on and windows down to suck out the offending air. Eventually it got to the point where I couldn't smell it and only had a hint of the smell.

So I am wondering what the smell was. Obviously it was either mold or the freon somehow getting out. Any thoughts from those that have done a recharge themselves? The car is outa warranty so I can't really just take it in without thinking of the costs.
