Bad Mpg

So my MPG is roughly around 20, its been like this for about 2 weeks what could be the problem.... I took off my intake and it got even worse i was at about 18 then.... I'm not driving like an ******* or anything... i drive 44 miles round trip to work at least 4 times a week usually at about 65 to 70 MPH.... what could be my problem

So this is my check list on this situation...
I just did an oil change and changed and gaped the plugs
I have to checkout the Fram Oil Filter I put in, I heard bad things about them recently
Next going to replace the semi-new the air filter with a K&N Drop-in
I'm going to change the Fuel Filter
Then I'm going to change the o2 sensor if none if the above works
If that fails I'm changing the DP to catless or SS/SC

Is there anything else I can look into?

Check your plug gap and make sure your MAF is clean.

I just changed, and gaped the plugs yesterday, and still nothing. Is there anything special that I can use to clean the MAF sensor? I really don't think that its the MAF sensor, since if it was I would throw codes, for it not sensing enough air...

Might be the high rise, causing to much drag.

JK, have you changed all your fluids on time?

how would the fuel filter affect gas mileage, but yes I've done the injector cleaner 2 times in 2 years... how can I check the the fuel filter?

Pull it out and look at it.

Fuel filter being clogged will make your car run like crap.

Does the car seem slower? Check your rear brakes, maybe one of the shoes is dragging.

Have you noticed any loss of power? If so, it could also be the cat.

Then you need to lay off the damn gas or fix your car. You should not get that low for average

Its not like the car is fast to begin with... but no I haven't noticed any type of power loss it still runs ok. I know in my old probe when the fuel filter was bad it kinda hesitated when i would step on the gas, but there really are no noticeable problems with the car beside the gas millage. Its kinda weird.

LOL you must stomp the gas every time you get going and floor it everywhere you go...

If its the cat getting the ss/sc downpipe might help.... I think I'll try that and see what happens

thanks for the laugh but yeah with the fluids I just did an oil change when I changed the plugs. I'm gunna take a look at the new oil filter I used. I just seen a bunch of bad things about the Fram oil filters so I might change that too.

the cat was my first instinct...maybe even as simple as an O2 sensor gone bad

well...eventually you might. maybe the O2 senor hasn't failed, it could just be fouled kinda like spark plugs get, I've never had to change an O2 sensor before...I'm really just throwing out possibilities

Only things I know that can cause mpg's to go down from normal (other than obvious stuff) is spark plug wear, cat is clogging, and from my "understanding" O2 sensors wearing out

I took the intake off just to see what happens. Apparently it wasn't the intake since it still stayed low. Also Last oil change wasn't to long ago...

I really believe you would get a CEL from the car very quickly if the O2 sensor went bad. This all seems very weird because the car should indicate such a bad problem if it's affecting gas mileage that much.

Do you notice any heavy black soot on the tail pipe.

Really the only thing you can do is start on the intake side and move to exhaust soo.....

Check air filter, then clean MAF sensor, clean throttle body, check spark plugs ( regap or change), Next would be CAT and O2 sensors. If it's not any of those, you have a tune problem or maybe something worse.

even if it doesn't "cure" anything, cleaning your throttle body will at least help your engine run smoother, all you'll be out is cost of TB cleaner and maybe 30 minutes of your time.
