Battery Dead + Trunk Wont Open

2006 Chevy Cobalt

The battery is dead, the battery is in the trunk, and the trunk wont open. Not even with the key.

Is there a trunk release leaver on the inside of the car somewhere?

Or, is there a way to jump the car under the hood? If so, where are the terminals and what do they look like?

Any other options would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Are you serious?

Open the hood.

Look for a red capped think on the drivers side.

Hook the red jumper to this...then the black to any ground...the strut support is right there.

ur key will open the trunk, i unhook the battery all they time and lock the trunk...

u can jump the car from the front, look at the big red plastic thing, flip that, put ur positive on tht and negative on strut tower.

dont see how ur trunck isint opening with the key... u turning it the right way? lol

x2. i dont understand why you say your key wont work tho. it should.

Thanks for the quick response... And yes, im totally serious about the key not working because of a dead battery... The key turns, but the trunk still would not open... The key lock must be powered by the actuator, because once I applied power to the car, I could use the key to open the trunk.

Now onto my next question... When I install the new battery, the alarm goes off and will not stop by pressing any of the remote buttons on the keychain. Whats the solution? I'll be searching the forums while I wait on a reply.

Btw, this is my cousins car, which is why I did not already know the location of the big red post that was starring me in the face when I opened the hood, lol....

turn on the car, just put ur key in the ignition, should stop the alarm.

and thts impossible the key locks are designed to be redundant and work when ur battery is dead.

wudman 05-25-2008 11:21 AM

lol impossible or not, the trunk key wont work with a dead battery... 06 Cobalt, try it....

i have an 06 cobalt, have opened the trunk multiple times on a dead battery...

the whole reason for mechanical door locks on a car that has remote entry is so that if the battery fails you can still open ur car.

Putting the key in the ignition did not work in stopping the alarm.. I even tried turning it...

Press and hold the red button.

Don't people play with their FOBs to see what they do?

JBomm 05-25-2008 11:45 AM

the trunk should open with the key. this has happened to me once.

Ok the alarm went off by itself after about 1 minute... I was too worried about waking up the neighbors/running down the new battery to try that in the first place so I kept unhooking the battery to stop the alarm.

This all started last night when my cousin called me and told me that her key was stuck in the ignition and she could not get it out. I figure that was impossible, so I came over this morning trying to wiggle it while turning the sterring wheel and adjusting the shifter, etc... After about 2 minutes I decided to come into her house and get some online help... I found a good piece of info about the white button under the steering colum and that got the key out. Then I went to open the trunk with the key and nothing happened. My cousing thought I might have been doing something wrong, so she tried with no success.. I thought that maybe the trunk was unlocked but maybe it didnt pop up so I even tried lifting after the key was turned, but the trunk would not unlock...

So I went to autozone, got a new battery, and some cables.... Hooked the cables to the front post so that we could get the trunk opened and the trunk worked....

Everythings fine now though, thanks for all the help.. Couldnt have done it without this site... Ive added it to the favorites on her computer...

Thanks again,

Woodman

:lol::lol::lol: but seriously... tell ur cousin to take it in...ur mechanical locks should DEFFINATLY be opening, especially without power.

berts420 05-12-2010 09:10 PM

hey, i got the same problem, except i disconnected the negative to put in a CAI, when when i went to open the trunk again i found out that the guy that had the car befor me cracked a key off in the lock or its siezed or something, the key wont even begin to go in, so with the battery disconnected, no trunk latch, and not being able to fold down the seats....???? :cussing:

DaBuzzard 05-13-2010 02:34 PM

Hook a battery to the boost terminal under the hood, pop the trunk, disconnect booster battery.
Reconnect battery in trunk.
Done.

Perhaps it was the valet key, and that is why the trunk wouldn't open?

s.c 10-28-2012 10:31 PM

a valet key??? cobalts are a poor mans race car. who pays for valet anyways. ill walk and save myself some money
