brakes engaging while driving!!!

Hey guys so this is really crazy... about two days ago i was driving on the highway and my car starts slowing down very slightly and my car is shaking a little (i think one of my rotors is slightly warped) and i realize the brakes are engaged... after alittle while it will stop slowing down but the engage point is at the very top of the pedal, it doesnt get back to normal untill i slow down. it seems like this is going on only when im going above 40 mph but doesnt get to the extreme of engaging without touching the brake untill im going like 70... i checked fluid levels and they are fine.. what could this be????

Is it the rear or the front thats engaging? Or both

does your car have ESC? it could be the ESC causing the brakes to engage.

You could get the car in the air and spin the wheels by hand and see if you can hear them catching with the brakes

it only fully engages when going around 70 mph and it seems to happen once every 40 miles or so. but will get really close to engaging over 40 mph.

I would think its a caliper/s or the master cylinder. Or like said above the ESC

But before you start buying parts and stuff try bleeding your brakes

If there is air in the brake lines, as it heats up it will expand, raising the petal and eventually engaging the brakes. Definitely bleed first. When the car is cool do the brakes seem spongy or mushy at all?

Yeah if you have a spongy pedal it could be air in the system. Hopefully that fixes your problem

hey guys, so bled the brakes and nothing changed so i replaced master cylinder, front pads and rotors and still doing it... the faster i go the higher the engage point gets until about 70 mph where it engages slightly... could it be a caliper? how can i test them?

How did your fluid look? Might be time to change out all the fluid. Your fluid could be boiling.

Loosen the calipers and try to push the pistons back in, they should move with reasonable pressure and should be smooth. If one is difficult to press in or catches, that's probably the side with issues.

Usually if you have a caliper dragging it will be overheating the rotors and you can see that in the wear surface and also the edges can turn reddish-orange if they've been hot enough for long enough.

If it's both fronts, it's most likely false ABS actuation, the block may not be releasing full pressure, if it's retaining slight pressure after you apply the brakes, the friction will increase with speed and as they heat up they will grab more.

Post pics of the rotors, might be able to see something obvious.

If it sounds kinda like a playing card in bicycle spokes, u need a new wheel bearing. Mine did the same thing.

For a non engaging caliper you have air in the caliper, a leak in the line to that caliper, or your ABS system has blocked fluid flow to that side. Find someone with a tech2 to operate/diagnose the ABS system
