Crankshaft Position Sensor (car died, no start)
I'm at 66k miles and this happened to me today...with the same code.
Luckily, I bought the 75k warranty extension when I bought the car....I just hope I don't get any CRAP when I take it up there.
The bastards.

sweet write-up, too bad i didnt have wireless internet when I was on the side of the ******* road before I called AAA...
Good news is that I started it before they towed it, and the dealer did a code check for me for free and told me the code so I could do my own work

damn, my engine just got rebuilt and im having this issue. anyone know how to replace it? i been searching and cant find it. the dealership wont cover it under warranty cause its definently not stock and i dont wanna pay a shitload out of pocket to get it fixed
It's right over the starter on the front of the engine. Remove the single 10mm bolt that holds it down and pull it out. It's a bit of a pain to get to, but othewise it's not bad.
mine just failed this weekend. had no idea what happened and had a buddy that used to work for chevy scan the blown codes and told me this was the problem. i just rolled over 38k on my 07 s/c ss so it's good to have this part number in case it happens again in the future.
it did start again after about 15 min of it sitting there and i drove it home but still scary not knowing what the problem was. it was like hitting a brick wall at 30 mph as it killed the engine in second gear.
extremely helpful thread, thank you!

wow. I finally get to join the ckp failure group. My car died while going throun an intersection tonight. After 5 minutes it started and I brought it to autozone to have the light read. Crankshaft sensor failure. I am gonna check the connections before I replace it. Does anyone have pictures of where it would be located. I have read its by the starter. Im hoping its not behind the serpetine belts
. Someone please help
I'm trying to fix my nieces car she has an 07 cobalt. the sensor that is above the stater looks like the coolant sensor. I can't seem to find the Crankshaft sensor can anyone tell me where this is at or pictures of location? any help would be great thanks.
That is the sensor. There is an oil pressure sensor in the area, maybe that's what you are seeing.
My codes are the same but auto zone ordered a crank sensor not a cam sensor. We replaced the crank sensor and still no luck. Didn't correct proble.

Relearn Procedure
I have a 06 cobalt 2.2 LS....just changed the CKP and now car wont start....how Do I perform the relearn procedure? what kind of scan tool do I need?
Thank you!
Thank you!
Most of the problems with the CKP signal have been attributed to a poor electrical connection either at the CKP sensor or up at the ECM/PCM. (although not surprisingly replacing the sensor often repairs the connection as well) Sometimes (rarely) the seal around the magnet itself allows the sensor to take on engine oil, which can eventually short out the windings. If you unplug the sensor and you see engine oil within the connection, it's likely not far from failure. But it's not like this is something "chronic" on the LSJ or anything.
The "quick check" for testing the CKP signal is making it to the ECM/PCM is to observe for consistent RPM values while cranking the engine on a scan tool (or Aeroforce gage) Detailed testing can also be performed at the sensor itself. LSJ CKP sensor resistance should be betwen 600-1100 ohms and an AC voltage signal of a few hundred mill-Volts can be measured across the sensor circuit while cranking.
It only takes about 20-30 minutes to change the CKP sensor on the Ecotec, as the starter will generally have to be removed to access it- as it probes through a hole in the LH side block just below the oil filter housing(see pic) and the Crankshaft Variation Relearn will need to be performed whenever it's replaced.
Not sure how the OP figures a CKP sensor failure results in a condition that would have you "be inclined to assume your starter has failed" when the engine will CRANK just fine, -it just wont start as there will be no fuel/spark delivered . This is because the triggering of the injectors and the coils is syncronized to the 58X signals created by the CKP.

Same problem!
I replaced it today, Just I have a 2.2L 06 LS....just jack the car up...remove the starter....then the sensor is right behind it....pop it out carefully maybe using a flathead for some prying...and slide the new one in with some grease around the O-ring..
I just need to know how to perform the relearn procedure.

Thanks for the thread guys i just had a problem for a while and keep waiting for half an hour to start back up and now my CEL is on so im gonna try to replace it tommrw hopefully it helps smh im tired of seeing my CEL on
ballin on the budget!!

The re-learn has to be enabled by a tech 2 scanner, you can try with HPT but they don't support your model, the scanner has the function but it's hit or miss in my experience.
I'd lean towards you not having something plugged in properly if the car won't start at all.
