dip stick issues

ive noticed since stage 2 that when i really play my dipstick seems to pop out. anyone else having this trouble? it just pops out enough to spray oil on the inside of hood blanket and some splatters on the valve cover, just enough to **** me off but not enough to have any major oil loss.

There is a thread about this issue. GM has said that this gasket will solve your problem.

New improved intake gasket.

Ecotec Intake Gasket 12597855

Models: 2005-2006 Chevrolet Cobalt SS 2004-2006 Saturn Ion Redline with 2.0L Engine (VIN P - RPO LSJ)

Talk to your dealer and have them do a search for a tech bulletin for the problem.

ok thanks. what if i just put the bigger rings in. is that extra pressure in the crank case doing any damage?

^^^ it could possibly cause problems. The increased pressure could force oil from the engine into your intake via bypass tube. I had lots of oil in my intake, supercharger and intake manifold.

Could be your rings on their way out. You are boosting the crankcase maybe. Do a compression test. I fail to see how a new intake manifold gasket would cause the dipstick to pop out. Lol. I've had mine on and off many times. There's nothing that could cause such a thing.

I would like to think that its not your rings as I dought you have an excessive amount of miles on your car ( and that you broke the car in properly). Also, I have met several guys at the local track running 22 PSI with stock internals so it PROBABLY is not the boost either. Are you running stock mounts? Maybe its a vibration thing, as you say it only happens when you play hard.

I also agree that the intake gasket causing this is unlikely.

Just a thought

My rings were bad before I even had 10,000 miles on the car and only a 2.8" pulley.

dipstick

car was broken in properly and maintained to a T. the first time i caught this i thought the dealer left it that way after an oil change. i spose it could be from some wheel hop. now that i think about it when i let my brother drive it the other night he had it hoppin some. didnt even think about that cuz i rarely hop it.

10K and the rings were shot! That sucks, why do you think this happened and what did you do? Dealer?

I have at times experienced severe wheel hop and my dipstick never came out, maybe try a new one.

Hey Tom!

Does the GM bulletin mention the PCV system as part of this problem? The PCV system on the ECOtec is different than older cars -- as in there is a metered hole in the intake Vs the old PCV valve. Is the metered hole in the gasket itself -- so this new one just has a bigger metered hole in the new gasket?

Thanks

everyone I"ve seen this happen to ended up with broken ringlands on the pistons... sorry to say but its probably exessive blow by.... I had it happen on ly one time on my car, but that was due to exessive wheel hop (testing stg VI C/A for you guys) but it never did it again.
but def get a compression and leakdown test done asap before any more damage occurs.. also the oil through the S/C is not good, one of my friends had this problem and it ended up frying the s/c also besides the blown motor....

Well I plan to come to my dealer prepared with the intake gasket and O Rings ahead of time when I get the Stage 2, and I have the Part # for the gasket, but does anyone have a part # for the larger O Rings?

well as an update never had this problem since, but I did install the new intake manifold gasket 2 weeks ago, but as far as o-rings, my dipstick stays in just fine.
new motor is getting the enlarged (-12an) Pcv line so I don't have to worry about it anymore

So has GM actually done anything about this... I've had it happen twice.

Once with GM STAGE II with a 2.85 ZZP Pulley and they dropped a new motor in... which only had 15 or 16k miles at the time... after that we did the intense stage V and the car would still **** up... then after installing the Interceptor and got the code we needed to find the issue which happened to be my stock cat was melted shut so there was a lot of problems the first time, took me and Chris alot of phone calls and several hours of poking around with data codes to locate the CAT issue I was having... new exhaust system fixed that right up ... and the car fired over fine and ran like a dream for anotheer 15k miles.

The second and most recent... Intense Stage V... happened after yet another 15k miles (car has like 32k on it total, about 16k on the new motor)of having Intense Stage V installed on new motor.... Chis at StreetDreamz did a compression test 90psi in cyl 2 and 180psi in the rest. So the ring in CYL 2 or piston is kaput...

I'm ordering pistons... forged moly/ceramic coated from Diamond Racing... new gaskets... and having my head ported and valve/ cam work done by Flowtechnics while I'm at it...

I'm just wondering if I'll get another 15k miles before I fry another ring... I used to make fun of the scene in Fast & Furious 1 when Brian busted his ride and "fried his rings" now all of a sudden I don't think thats sooo funny anymore (even though the movie is still more of a comedy then actually true to life for street racing) but either way... I'm searching through trial and error with the help of Street Dreamz to locate the source of this problem and find a permanent solution. And its costing an arm and a leg... but my best advice to you guys is talk to Chris (user name StreetDreamz on css.net) and he should put you on the right path...
