P0300

The powertrain control module (PCM) uses information from the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor in order to determine when an engine misfire is occurring. By monitoring variations in the crankshaft rotation speed for each cylinder, the PCM is able to detect individual misfire events. A misfire rate that is high enough can cause the 3-way catalytic converter (TWC) to overheat under certain driving conditions. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will flash ON and OFF when the conditions for TWC overheating are present. If the PCM detects a misfire rate sufficient to cause emission levels to exceed mandated standards, DTC P0300 will set.

would that have anything to do with the horrible rattling sound that i'm hearing? or the extremely uneven tone of the exhaust?

I get it at idle. I just reset it when it comes up. I go out and get octane boost or buy some better gas and it usually goes away. Hopefully it is that simple for you. I have had it a while now and no other issues, so I don't think it is anything serious. I hope anyway.

I wouldnt think that octane booster or different gas would fix this. No ****, you can hear this thing rattling from 50 yards away. It's horrible

any possibility the noise i'm hearing could be the timing chain breaking? Just a shot in the dark. for the last few weeks i've heard a clicking noise at idle, then it began to be all the time and more consistent, and now it sounds like ****. Kinda reminds me of when the timing chain went on my 94 yota pickup i use to have....

I had a rattle that turned out to be the hydraulic timing chain tensioner.
Shop replaced the tensioner and no more rattle

hm.. well that gives me some hope.. I'm gonna try to have it towed out there tomorrow or the next day, I guess I COULD drive it, considering it still runs, but if i roll into the parkin lot and they hear that I guarantee i've lost all warranty on the spot

update** dealer called this afternoon and said that Chevrolet wants receipt from my most recent oil change... thank god I had it in the glove box. Apparently my choice of oil was in question, because it's apparently required to run on synthetic, which I didnt know.. But, lucky for me i'm a big fan of Synthetic and I run it anyway. According to the Tech at the dealer, my motor is pretty much destroyed. he's suppose to call me back tomorrow with more information, and i'll post up as I hear.

ok so I was just informed that the cause of all this damage is aftermarket oil filter. Sounds kinda fishy to me, but whatever. Anyway, from what my dealer is telling me, Chevrolet is trying to say that it's not warranty covered because it's not an OEM oil filter. They've been in contact w/ the place that changed my oil, so now i'm just waiting to see what the two of them come up with. I really hope that I dont get stuck having to rebuild this motor. If so, it will be the last chevrolet that I EVER buy. Although, I feel that they will take care of me in the end.

that's what I said. Dealership can't do anything as of right now... it's between Me, Chevrolet, and Valvoline Instant Oil Change

There are a lot of variables here but I highly doubt that an oil filter caused that level of damage. Further more if the dealer is claiming the aftermarket filter specifically caused your engine to destroy itself then they need to prove it. That is federal law, heres the link https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/general-cobalt-68/your-rights-about-your-car-warranty-aftermarket-mods-7439/

learn your rights. a dealer can NOT require you to use any specific type of oil filter, unless they provide it at no charge. said differently, it is ilegal for any dealer to require you to use a specific brand of oil filter unless it is paid for by the dealer.

secondly, how would the oil filter have anything to do with this? it wouldn't. don't take that crap, make them fix it.

What filter was it? I'm just curious since they are blaming this on it.

then you need to get someone from chevrolet on the phone. don't give in, it's their responsibility to fix it. not yours.

all depends on if the filter that was used is up to the standard GM sets.
MM doesnt protect you if the filter that was used isnt up to the standard required for the vehicle.
