Engine Breaking

05 2.2 Ls 5Spd, it seems that when i engine break, i burn lots more gas, i filled the car friday, drove it for a couple of hours, then took it out on saturday for 20 minutes and about another 20 minutes on sunday (work and back), then monday, i had to get more gas because i was on E, i dont have any leaks or stuff like that, so is the engine breaking killing the gas? because i could get a full tank monday and that would last me till friday or saturday no problem, the tail pipe is pitch black on the inside, so is the car running bad or what? anyone have experiance with this?

Of course engine braking will take more gas than none at all. I think your problem may be more gas pedal related though, even a slight change in driving habits can kill gas mileage

Actually engine braking DOESNT use more gas.
in fact it uses no gas at all.

your vehicle cuts off fuel to the engine when engine braking.

it dosent cut it off entierly, my car sends out little pops like its backfiring, and that would be because there is more air then gas going into the system right? and if it did shut off when you touch the gas there would be a second or two befor it cuts back in, the way it goes is that it should be only sending enough gas to keep it to idle at 1000, so the car is going at 3000 rpm, but its only receiving enough gas to keep it above 1000, because its currently locked in gear so the wheels are turning the pistons causing the high rpm's, with no gas theres no acceration therfor engine breaking. and my driving habbits have mellowed the past few days, its been raining and i feel no need for speed when it rains.

^^^^QFT

Black tailpipe usually means you're running rich, do you run a piggyback at all or are you stock? If there's absolutely ZERO change in driving habits, then you may have a clogged cat, that will also cause fuel mileage to go down. Also check the air in your tires. Underinflated tires will also cause gas mileage to go down.

LOL.

I got my cobby brand new on monday. My first fill up I averaged 21MPG, mostly stop and go city driving. So yes, in your case, something is wrong with the car. Does it idle normal or is it kind of rough, or does it run the same?

Downshifting.

By easier on the gas, does that include shifting earlier? Sometimes by upshifting lower in the power band you could bog the engine, which, ironically, seems to kill gas mileage faster than anything.

you dont HAVE to engine brake.
but youll use more gas, and replace brake pads 5 times more often than I will.

Most cars are the same or similar. But IDC is 0% when engine braking above 1000 RPM. There is NO fuel being used, as long as throttle position is 0 and you are above 1000 RPM which most people are when engine braking.

Engine braking will cool the cylinders off VERY quickly since its just an air pump. So engine braking after a hard WOT run is actually not a bad idea.

Your driving style has probably changed to affect MPG, engine braking should have much effect unless you are rev matching to down shift. If your not on a road course just use up the brake pads...they are much cheaper then a clutch...

It makes me shake my head that whoever is teaching the next generation to drive, doesnt teach them how to downshift and engine brake.

i know i dont HAVE to engine break if i dont want to, but coasting in neutral is a nono, so i figured id start doing it, i dont match my revs i just do it slow with a bit of breaks, i know how to engine break, ive been driving sticks for almost 5 years now, i would engine break in my other cars and i wouldnt have a problem with my gas going quickly, now im up to suggestions to what could be causing this problem of my gas being eaten away. im still running on the gas i bought on friday wich was about 24 liters, compared to the full tank that got eaten away within the same amount of time. so could my car be burning improperly? my car dosent idle over 1000 rpm, sometimes it even bogs down to 700.
probs? solutions?

P.s. getting a new driver wont help :P
