Engine Power Reduded
Engine Power Reduded
So I was driving home yesterday in 2006 SC SS and I was cruising along at about 55. All of a sudden my acceleration was gone and the RPMs started dropping. I pulled over and listened to the motor and it was idling normal but had no throttle response. I turned off the car waited five minutes then restarted the car. It started right up and had it's throttle response back. I started back on my journey home and notice a funny smell coming from the car. I ran through the display on the dash looking at oil life and coolant temps. I noticed that the coolant temp was at 217 degrees. As I kept driving the temp went up to 235. At 235 the RPMs dropped off and the engine power reduced message came on. I pulled over and waited a few minutes and restarted the car. The motor fired and ran flawless. I got back on the road and drove a mile and then the RPMs fell off again, but this time no engine power reduced message. Instead the engine made a popping sound near the down pipe and the wine from the supercharger sounded like it was muffled.
So here is a bit of history on this car. I bought this car used back in 2013 with 53000 miles on it. It now has 125000 miles. I recently had to have the Coolant sensor replaced as well as the crankcase sensor. About 3 weeks ago I had to replace the flex pipe due to a quarter size hole in it. The guy at the shop showed my the inside of my cat and said it was almost clogged and the I would have to replace it. He said it would cost my $600 bills to put a California legal cat on there. I am currently looking into a new clutch for it because the clutch pedal sit very low to the floor compared to when I bought and the car s milage would suggest that be replaced. The previous owner said the she had not replaced the clutch and that the car wa bone stock with no mods what so ever. I put a K&N Typhoon kit and Prothane trans mounts on it. The rest of the car is still stock.
Ok so now my question is, is the problem I am having with RPMs due to clogged cat or is there sometime internally wrong with the motor?
Any body have some ideas on this. I am really starting to get tired of throw thousands of dollars into fixing this car every time I turn around. I miss my 05 SC SS the I sold to buy my house. This why I despise buying someone else's used car. Anyway ideas guy and gals would be greatly appreciated.

Are you throwing any engine codes? I would image you'd have to be to go into engine power reduced mode. A clogged cat could be making it hard to evacuate the exhaust gases which I would think could be capable of causing your symptoms.
