Excessive side to side slop in shifter.

So, car is an 06 Lt with 170,000 miles on it. this has been an issues for a bit, but it got worse before the car went in for a trans rebuild, and the shop said its definitely someting to figure out. My car has 1-2" of side play when your in ear with the shifter. It's got new base bushings, and the big O ring is good up top. But yeah, when you put it into any gear, you can wiggles 1-2" side to side with the shifter while staying in gear. its really annoying has has made getting into reverse a bit awkward sometimes.

Anyone else have ideas for what it could be? or what else to look at?

As far as I know from me trying to fix this but it's not quite as bad yet, it's from the shifter housing the plastic part that actually holds the ball down gets warn away and allows the shifter to move while the cables don't.

I've thought of just shimming it with pieces of plastic, I think the pivot ball on my TWM shifter is smaller than the stock plastic one.

I've heard either its the plastic piece or the cables. rather not have to change cables.

Will the SS parts fit or not? I know where i can get an SS shifter box fro cheap from a part out, heh.

It's not the cables, if you look at where the pivot is it moves around, please try the SS shifter because I've always wondered the same thing, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Roll pins where? in the shifter box? I really don't wanna start just throwing money at this thing, and sadly dont have another car to let it sit at the shop again.

How do you check cable tension / adjust cable tension?

Looks like its the ends on the shift cables. Gotta replace the whole cable assembly.

Would that work on the non SS cars? when they change the leaking axle seal next week they are gonna check the ends of the cables. I found a shop that used to build Ion drag cars, its nice to take it to someone that knows these cars and isnt just gonna shotgun parts at it when i cant fix it myself.

I just changed my cables tonight. It was a little time consuming. Glad I had a lift to use.

Looks like it is the cable ends that are bad. So, now to source new shift cables.

Changed shifter cables and they are adjusted right. Still has slop in gear. wtf. It helped, but didnt solve it. Base bushings did nothing. I guess maybe a cable clamp?

I'm still thinking it's the shifter ball moving around, take off the center council cover and see if that's the part moving.

Please try an SS shifter base, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Its in teh box. if you clamp down on the box, shifter and the top retaining ring, slop goes away. trying to get my hands on an SS shifter box to troubleshoot this weekend, i will post info on what I find out.

I don't see why the SS assembly wouldn't work, pushes the cables the same you might just have to get rid of reverse lockout. I want to know because if it works I'm going to get one.

CED 1800 441 5150. Ask for Tom lol.
The last time I fitted one of those PITA TWM shifters into an F23 shifter box it looked very different especially underneath, but then like Andrew says if it works thats good. Problem is you gotta find out and I dont have an F23 handy to try one of my spare F35 shifter boxes in,.....good luck with your quest.

the SS and LT boxes do not swap out sadly. the SS box is shaped differently and is longer, and its just enough to not properly secure the cables. Im sure you could fab it out and make something work. But i'm gonna search for an F23 shifter box now.
