First DIY Oil Change

Alright, so I would like to change my own oil for the first time, but I am going to need some help from you guys. Sorry if some of these are noob questions, I know we have a how-to on oil change, but it is for the SS; and when you seach 'oil change' you get nothing. So here it goes:

1) Is this the filter I should use? http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...P1671C193.aspx It is part number PF457G, but my manual says to use PF456G.

2) Will I need to jack my car up? If so, what is a good brand to get?

3) Where is the best place to buy oil?

4) The how-to says I need a 1 1/4" socket and a 1/2" drive ratchet, Is this what I need for my 2.2?

5) Any other tips would be helpful... like not to forget to buy an oil pan.

Thanks Guys!

(changing the oil is no different between the SS and base models.. the supercharged one is more difficult because the supercharger is in the way during the oil filter removal/replacement)

Make a trip to your local Auto parts store (autozone, murrays, Advance, etc..)

Get some ramps like these

ask them to make sure you have the right filter
Get 6 quarts of 5W30 in the brand that you like most
Get a drain pan like this

Then just take the used oil back to the auto parts store so they can dispose of it...

the ratchet and drive should be the same, if i'm not wrong we all have the canister filters. not sure on the filter, go to your local autoparts store, and look throught the book next to all the oil filters, find your vehicle model and engine, it will list the compatable filters. i suggest acdelco if you can find them.

as for oil itself, look around, they all sell the same stuff, usually very little difference in price.

jack brand? just go to autozone or similar and get the set with two jackstands. yes, you need to jack it up to drain the oil. make sure you look up how much oil you'll need, it's in the owners manual.

yes, you'll need an oil pan, and something to put it inot, because you need to dispose of the used oil properly, it's considered hazardous waste.

i can't think of anything else, GOOD LUCK!

Ramps are what i use for oil changes.. its quicker

but if you prefer jacking it up, use a nice jack and be sure its securely placed on jackstands before going underneath!!!!!!! do not go under it without it being on Jackstands or ramps... Never trust a JACK alone! (another reason i use ramps.. its usually safer)

really, if your going to change it every 3000-5000 miles.. any decent brand will work fine

Stay away from the ULTRA cheap brands though..

lol.. it really doesnt matter.. its all a matter of opinion and most oils are still have quite a bit of life left when you drain them..

All good syntheic oils are overkill for 3000 mile oil changes

if you are a diehard fan for a single brand you have been a victim of good marketing..

so dont worry just pick something decent..

If you have long arms you can reach in from just in front of the passenger's side tire and remove the drain plug without raising the car. Need strong hands for this since there is no room for leverage. Oh, and a shallow drain pan.

I usually get two 2x4s and put them under one side, drive up on them. That elevates the car enough to get the leverage necessary.

LS motors are only 5 quarts of oil. dont over fill, it causes problems.

Haha well IDK, if you know a guy named Brad Hill, graduated from Howell High in 05... he rolls around in a orange Grand Am GT Coupe, haha I don't know how many of those are around in Howell but if you see one give it a hard time for me ok????

Well I'm trying to get a bunch of people on here together for the Woodward Dream Cruise this Aug. As of now the date we're planning on getting together is Friday Aug 15th day before the main cruise also got a post on here about it as well. PM me or check it out if you are interested.

Name sounds familiar...real familiar, but not sure. I'll keep an eye out. Moving back to flint today and won't be back in Howell for a month or two so who knows.

As far as the cruise, I'm real busy at school with fraternity stuff on weekends, but if it's free I'll hit you up.
