Front end Hops

I have what I think may be a problem. When I first got my 07 SS/SC it would break loose if I was rolling and then hit it. It would be a real clean break and then I would shift, Chirp second and go. One time I did this and the front end started to hop. Ever since then anytime I get on it in first it starts to hop pretty bad. This actually started at about 800 miles and the car now has 2800. This is not something I do on a regular basis as I am not somebody that consistently beats my car however obviously when I first got it I was taking a lot of people for rides. Since I got the car in October the weather has dropped a lot and now is usually in the 30s. I always thought that the colder the weather the more the car would spin and wheel hop was something that tends to happen when it is warmer and the car is trying to hook however a am pretty new to this FWD game as I used to own RWD Mustangs and Camaros. Please let me know if this is a cobalt thing or if you think I broke something. Thanks for all the help

type "wheelhop" into the search button under "contained in title"
and start reading.

its a FWD thing.

if you ever feel it happening again, get off the throttle ASAP.
it CAN cause serious damage if you keep applying power.

No its wheelhop it is a huge problem for Cobalts, all FWD for that matter...

Motor, Tranny, and a Torque Dampener should eliminate the issue...

Whenever you get wheel hop get off it immediatly, otherwise you will be coughing up some $ for a new axle

I appreciate that info. I had not actually seen a thread for this yet but I will search it out. When it happens I always let off the throttle right away.

After searching around a bit I ofund that most people don't like the TD. I would like to try the motor and tranny mounts first. Is Prothane the way to go for this. This car is going to remain stock for a few years until my wife is ready for a new car and I can get my hands on this one.

if you are ok with vibrations, go with mounts.

I used the TD for a good while, i was very happy with it, especially as a daily driver mod, that will help at the track.
good thing about it, is you could remove it in under a minute if you dont like the vibs on a long roadtrip.

Mounts will be more effective with controlling wheelhop though.

I had thought about the vibrations also but wasn't sure if it would be bad or not. Really what I want is ti to feel like it does now but without the hopping. I will have to look into this td some more if you say it will vibrate more with the mounts.

I installed the torque dampner and wasn't too impressed by the results so im going to go with mounts, hopefully you'll have better luck with it

torque damper helps, but my car still hopped LOTS with it. the mounts help a lot though. i'm not afraid to spin the wheels anymore. yesterday i spun the wheels all through second, up to about 65. would have never even considered doing that before.

Don't waste your money on a dampner first... I made that mistake. Just get the solid mounts... kiss any hop goodbye forever.

what dampers should we go for if we don't want big vibrations?

engine or tranny?

I believe that the only damper available attaches to the engine mount.

Works the other way... Colder temperatures make the tires harder, less pliable, and more prone to wheel hop.

I have to vote for the solid mount(s) though, torque dampers are just band-aids.
