Fuel Evap - 2 hours!

Hey guys - need some quick advice.

A few weeks ago, the check engine light popped on. Took it to the dealer, they said it was a bad gas cap. So they replaced it for free and all (warranty). Well, upon leaving the dealership, CEL came back on, and the DIC said 'check gas cap'. Figuring that it was no biggy, and/or that the dealership fucked up, I drove on for another couple weeks until I had time to take it back in.

Fast forward to today. Dealership says that it is a hole in the fuel evap line: a rock or something must have hit it.

A fucking rock? Seriously? Isn't that shit under the car supposed to be built for that kind of shit?

Anyways, they try and tell me that they cannot replace just the line or patch it (some BS about GM not allowing it yadda yadda) and that the entire tank has to be replaced, some $1400. Oh which of course is not warrentied btw.

So I figure that, I am not losing gas, and the only thing that is bad atm is the CEL... i'll live with it until I can figure out if it can be patched or what not. So the dealer tells me I have to pay $95 for a diagnostic fee. Fuckers!

Anywho, to my question - Can it be patched? And/or can the line just be replaced? Or are they right, and I need to call my insurance and bite the bullet? Help please asap. I have to pick up the car in 2 hours and don't want to be screwed out of $95 for no reason lol.

Thanks. :cssNET:

-Cliff notes- Hole in fuel evap line. Dealer says entire fuel tank must be replaced. Does it?

Depends on which line. The nylon lines are according to GM non serviceable. Regardless of whether its repairable or not youre on the hook for $95.

Cliff notes: repair damaged line with fuel hose or fuel safe epoxy.

Thanks. Fuel safe epoxy, would that be good on any of the evap lines? I haven't looked at it yet to know which line they are talking about.

Bump for more thoughts.

Alright well depending on the situation (I am about to look at it) I may just use JB Weld. It says it can be used on gas tanks etc... so should hold up fine.

Evap line? Repair it. At least there aren't spiders in it.

Yup, and then your area warranty rep woulda bounced the claim when the tank gets returned and the auditors discovered the pipe was damaged and not defective, and your dealership would got charged back for an unauthorised repair to the tune of $1000.

Dude...no car is bulletproof.

My dad bought a brand new bmw 7 series in 1999 (at that time) and the shit was falling apart in the first week...the interior paneling was falling out, lighting went out, seams were coming apart...fucking hilarious.

if there is a hole, you cant warranty that, it will bounce, and you are responsibe for diagnostics.

OMG, 7 series are awesome, not sure if it was the 99 style or the next style(cant remember) but the cup holder/storage bin at the front of the center console has one of the neat slow open lids, well if you spilled crap in it or got coins stuck in it, when you closed it the mechanism would be damaged, to replace that little lid, you needed the entire center console top/wood trim assembly, to the tune of $1700......those were fun.

And yeah, come on.....some people bitch about stuff that GM has no responsibility for, some times shit just happens, sometimes things just break and it doesnt mean they are defective or garbage or poorly engineered, it just means it broke, just because you bought a car from them doesnt mean they are liable to fix every failure that happens and they sure as hell cant be expected to take care of damages.

What if the guy you sold your car to came back to you everytime it broke, got damaged or made some sort of noise and expected you to diagnose and repair it free of charge??? You'd think he was out of his mind right? So why do so many of us treat Chevy like that?
