High pitched noise from engine when driving
Hi guys, I have a 2006 Cobalt SS. 100,000 kms, everything is stock.
Today was a bit sunny, so I opened my sunroof. As I was driving, I heard a really high pitched noise, probably from the engine. My music was pretty loud, and I could still hear the noise really well. This happened twice in an hour, driving from work back home.
The first time I noticed it was when braked for a speed bump, it stayed for about 30 seconds after going over the speed bump. In the last 10 seconds, it went much louder and then suddenly stopped. It happened a second time, about half an hour afterwards, while I was driving normally. It sounded exactly the same as the first time.
I checked all of my fluids and everything is normal, the check engine light didn't come on. My brake pads are all good, none is wore down enough to touch the rotor. I have new rotors and brake pads on the front. I let the car idle for 5 minutes and pumped up the RPM too, but didn't hear anything strange at all from the engine.
The noise is pretty much like someone who would brake with completely worn out brake pads. It also reminds me of a broken alternator, I had one of my older cavalier and it was pretty loud until I changed it.
B16a high pitch noise - YouTube This is the closest sound I found on youtube. If you can ignore the engine sound, thats kind of a high pitch I heard in my car.
If anyone can please help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I would rather do some preventive maintenance/replace what's necessary rather than break down somewhere.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to technical information to help with trouble shooting. If you were to decide upon working with a dealership to get this looked into and would like to speak with Customer Service, I would recommend getting in contact with GM of Canada at 800-263-3777.

Start simple.
Double check your brakes for any loose dirt or debris that could have been getting caught up and causing the noise. I've had brakes do this after doing the same thing you described (braking to go over a speed bump) - A small stone or peice of rust embeds itself in the brakes and causes an intermittent high pitched noise/squeel.
Clean them up and see if the noise continues.
