license plate light doesn't work

I've been pulled over 3 times already for this, can barely drive at night(not so good neighborhood, cops everywhere looking for an excuse to pull people over) I've changed the bulb twice, checked all the fuses, they are fine. There was some weird black stuff inside the socket that you plug the bulb into so I'm thinking it could be something to do with that, anyone know where I can buy one of those at? REally do'nt want to take it to a shop or to the dealer.

im sure your local parts store has one. all you need is a socket for a 168 bulb. Or if your already going through the trouble get an after market light strip or something for the light. you'll have to cut the old socket off anyway.

I think i might have my stock plate light laying around somewhere, or you could go to autozone and buy the LED plate light ($15) i got, only thing is depending on where you live some cops will give you **** for it being too bright. Which i drove across about 10 states and didnt have 1 cop pull me over for that or my blacked out tail lights.
