Post a video of the sound. If the belt broke you may have a bad bearing in one of the pullies.

Youtube works pretty good. Do you have a google or gmail account?

Also as Slowbalt said it could be a pulley bearing. I have had a pulley bearing go out and when it started making noise I really though it was the timing chain too. I even popped off my valve cover to make sure the tensioner was working correctly. Eventually the grinding noise stopped and this was the end result.

Could be your idler pulley just like mine. I ended up having a modify the idler pulley assembly so that I could replace the exploded pulley with a standard pulley for the tensioner. I dug and dug an dug for information on a replacement idler pulley but could not find one anywhere. If it is your pulley like it was on mine it should be exploding any time now. Does the sound sort of change at startup and then after it runs a while?

If you don't have an automotive stethoscope, remove the belt and spin each item, including the alternator.

The one above the crank is the idler pulley. Like I said earlier this pulley is very difficult to find by itself. When I went through this everyone thought the idler pulley and tensioner pulley were the same. I still never found the part number. Worst case you can machine your idler bracket to accept the same pulley as on the tensioner assembly.

Edit: Here is the thread I created when my pulley went out

mine was making a horrible noise.

its just a bolt that holds it on. I believe its a 22mm. its torque to yield, so get a new one.

Bought the balancer today fixing tomorrow.... I'm just worried I had a similar issue in one of my Taurus SHO' and it was crank cancer. .... had to weld new material around keyway and replace key and crank pulley. .... thanks...
