#PIP4729: Ecotec 2.0L / 2.4L (RPO LNF / LAF) Setting DTC P0016 P0017 After Timing Has Been Set - (Nov 4, 2009)
Subject: Ecotec 2.0L/2.4L (RPO LNF/LAF) Setting DTC P0016, P0017 After Timing Has Been Set
Models: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox
2010 GMC Terrain
With 2.4L Engine RPO LAF
2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
A technician may comment they have DTC P0016 or P0017 after resetting the timing after service. They may state that the engine is in time and all of the paint marks line up.
Recommendation/Instructions:
On Ecotec 4 cylinder engines (RPO LNF/LAF) with SIDI-Direct Injection the lower timing chain crank gear has a spacing washer installed in front of (and behind) the lower timing chain crank gear. This spacer/washer obscures/covers the correct timing mark. The outer spacer/washer is in between the crank/balancer pulley and the lower timing gear and may remain in place when the pulley is removed. The spacer/washer has a dot/mark on its surface that may be mistaken for the lower timing mark causing the tech to incorrectly time the engine. This may lead to cam correlation DTC's setting (such as P0016/P0017). Typically the technician will report he is sure the engine is in time. This outer spacer/washer must be removed when timing engine RPO LNF or LAF to view the correct timing mark on the lower crank gear. Additionally, EPC and eSI do not show the washer as present on the 2.0L SIDI engine RPO-LNF. (A change is in process)
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Thank the Lord for this post. I've been chasing this problem for days and this was the fix. A paper thin washer that I wouldn't even know was there covering up the correct dot. Without removing this washer I was referencing the wrong dot on the crank sprocket.
