Oil everywhere!!

So I go to the track this morning and I'm sitting in the lanes waiting for my turn. I start up the car and its idling for about 2 minutes and my CEL comes on. Well I didn't think much of it, I figured it was from my airbox mod as its done it a few times here and there. I make my pass 14.0 @ 101mph, I was like wow that sucked. I figure the weather was to blame 85* and like 95% humidity. I go back to the pits and unhook the battery to clear the code.

I make my second pass without a CEL coming on. Sweet! no problems, until I see that I ran a 14.3 @ 98mph. I was like Oh really? Wow this weather is killing me. I go to make my 3rd pass and right before I stage my CEL comes back on, So I was like to hell with it. Made my pass anyways. 14.4 @ 97mph... So I come back to the pits and pop the hood and HOLY FRIGGIN A MAN!!!! There is oil everywhere!! Dipstick is sticking out about an inch or so! I really hope it was just the intake gasket, I'm not boosting near as much as the guys losing the number 4. Either way, she's got an appointment Monday morning to get fixed up. Warranty is the stuff, especially when I'm in there with the Tech and Service manager.

Funny side note, I stuck around for a while after I parked to watch the festivities. There were like 3 Mustang GT's running 14.0-6's at 95-98mph. That made me feel a little better, even hurt the Cobalt could still hang with them!

It very well could be, however I do think there is a TSB out on the Intake gaskets popping and doing the same thing. Either way, I'm not worried my Tech takes care of me.

How would an intake gasket cause the dipstick to blow out?

I guess the gasket is crappy and is allowing boost to get by and get into the crank case. Wierd I know but way easier than pistons. Here is a link.

They will tell you that the 07's already have the new gasket. I went through this for over a month. What they ended up doing is putting a larger o ring on the dip stick. At least get the **** documented and keep harrasing like I am. So when something does f up we can say f u

Hmm maybe, I will find out next week for sure. I love warranty work, rental cars are great, don't have to put miles on my stuff.

lol yeah they =poop on a stick in the cobalt for sure, but my dad builds 383's with them for his various race cars, no boost or juice and those baby's hammer out 10's in the 1/4 all season long with no problems. I guess they don't like boost.

my buddy bought an 07 and took it to the track...did the same thing on every pass he made. took it to the dealer, fixed the gasket, no problem after that. all depends on the situation.

This is the first time I've had this happen and I've been much harder on it. I babied it the whole way home. I think I may take it back out and get on it a bit and see what happens. I wonder when they actually started using the "new" style gasket, because my 07 was actually built in Oct 06. I'm wondering if the gasket change wasn't sometime after that.

Just do a compression test. If it's possibly a ringland I wouldn't take it out and beat on it and risk more damage.

well, also, it was right after he put Stage 2, K&N intake, and 2.8 pulley on it after like 500 miles on the car. after about 3 passes with oil all over his engine, he decided to call it quits for the night

two down.

the piston is done. this is evident by the loss of mph.

Well, I get to take it to the dealer in the morning after I get off work. Hopefully I'll know something soon. They must be really seriously crappy pistons, I'm not boosting near as much as most people popping them...

its got absolutely nothing to do with boost. more boost is more prone to cause the issue due to heat but not the root cause.

I understand this but I don't feel it was creating enough heat to blow a piston. Especially since I don't have an outrageous pulley on it. Unless the IC pump stopped, I checked the lines thinking that may have been the cause but the hoses coming from the endplate were barely warm after the 3rd pass so I doubt that is the case.

think what you want, i know this issue and its effects.

a piston is dead.
